Jontay Porter bet on his own team to lose before receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA

After an official league investigation, Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban from the NBA for violating the league’s gambling rules.

Porter, who reportedly gambled a significant amount of money, was on a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors this season. Not only did the big man disclose confidential information to sports bettors about his own health status but he also placed more than a dozen bets on the NBA.

According to the investigation, between January and March 2024, three of the bets were multi-game parlays and included the Raptors. While he didn’t play in any of those games, Porter bet on Toronto to lose those games. These three were bets were all losses, per the report.

That is an absolutely awful look for Porter and more than deserving of the lifetime ban that he received.

Here is more from Adam Silver:

“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.”

Porter’s decision to bet against his own team, no matter how much they underperformed this season, was as foolish as it gets.
