Gamers will finally get a look at what Sony has in store for the upcoming PlayStation 5 on Thursday, as the company airs its “Future of Gaming” event (4:00 p.m. ET, YouTube or Twitch). The hour-long presentation will feature trailers of upcoming releases on PS5, and while we aren’t exactly sure what to expect, it has been rumored that new Horizon Zero Dawn and Gran Turismo games could be revealed.
Both of those titles made our list of 25 remakes, remasters and sequels we want to see on PlayStation 5. We scoured the PlayStation library, going back to the PS1, to find games we want to see revived for the next generation. Here’s our wish list:
Sequel: Grand Theft Auto VI
We somehow went an entire console generation without a new Grand Theft Auto entry, as Rockstar instead leaned into expanding GTA online. The first glimpse of GTA 6 is going to melt the internet.
Remake: Resident Evil 4
Capcom has been delivering some visually stunning remakes of earlier Resident Evil titles, which hopefully indicates that a remade RE4 - the best entry in the series - is in the pipeline.
Sequel: Skate 4
Look, it's great that the Tony Hawk series is being revived and that will certainly scratch an arcade skating itch, but we need a new Skate.
Remake: Final Fantasy X
Just as many people think of Final Fantasy 7 as the quintessential PS1 game, I think of FFX in connection to the PS2. FFX has one of the best stories (and soundtracks) in the series, and with a FF7 Remake-level combat upgrade, an FFX Remake could be a GOAT-level RPG. Given how long the FF7 remake took, though, we might have to wait until the PS6 for this.
Sequel: Gran Turismo 7
Gran Turismo Sport laid a solid foundation for the future of the series, but its multiplayer focus left many fans unsatisfied. It's time for a meaty, numbered Gran Turismo.
Sequel: SSX 4
There just aren't enough sports games anymore, and SSX was one of the best series of the PS2 era. The revamp in 2012 wasn't a major success, but I can't even imagine how awesome a next-gen mountain would be.
Sequel: NBA Street Vol. 4
I'd settle for a re-release of any NBA Street game, but a new NBA Street starring our current generation of players would be much better.
Remakes: Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3
A "be careful what you wish for" ask because it seems unlikely that Hideo Kojima could ever get his hands on the IP from Konami, but these games are some of the most influential in PlayStation history and deserve to be restored.
Sequel: Resogun 2
Resogun was a brilliant and addictive twin-stick shooter for PS4 at launch in 2014, and a Resogun 2 for PS5's launch would be a nice surprise.
Remake: SOCOM
SOCOM was a groundbreaking series that delivered amazing online multiplayer gameplay before that was really a standard thing. There's no shortage of multiplayer shooters on the market, sure, but a new SOCOM would certainly be a hit with older gamers.
Sequel: Horizon Zero Dawn 2
The original was one of the most visually stunning games on PS4, and the follow-up is likely to be jaw-dropping.
Remaster: Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima is releasing in July on PS4 and there are no currently announced plans for a PS5 version, but this game looks amazing, and I would prefer to play the prettiest possible version. As with The Last of Us 2 and CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, it'd be a little disappointing if we didn't see an upgraded version for PS5.
Remaster: Bloodborne
One of the best PS4 exclusives of the generation
Remaster: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is still stunning five years after it's release, but CD Projekt did such a stunning job building this world that I want to see it in the highest possible fidelity.
Sequel: Monster Hunter: World 2
Monster Hunter World was a much more accessible entry point for new fans to the series, and I'm expecting even bigger monsters to hunt on PS5.
Remake: Intelligent Qube
An underrated PS1 puzzle game that has the potential to be a *terrifying* VR game.
Sequel: Street Fighter VI
Street Fighter V was a polarizing entry in the series, to say the least. It's time for a new chapter on PS5.
Sequel: The Elder Scrolls VI
Bethesda gave us a short teaser of TES VI two years ago, but we haven't seen anything more since then.
Sequel: Final Fantasy XVI
FF XV took the series in an exciting new direction gameplay-wise, and the next-gen effort is certain to be breathtaking.
Sequel: HITMAN 3
The rebooted HITMAN series has been one of the best evolutions during the current gen, and next-gen hardware should allow for even more intricate living worlds.
Remake: Silent Hill
It has been rumored that Hideo Kojima could be leading a Silent Hill project, and if that turns out to be true, expect a masterpiece.
Sequel: Killzone 4
Developer Guerrilla Games (the company behind Horizon Zero Dawn) is known for making visually stunning games, and while Killzone Shadow Fall on PS4 wasn't the best entry in the series, it'd be nice to see this classic PlayStation series return in the future.
Sequel: Diablo 4
Diablo 3 was a bit of a mess at launch, but eventually became a fantastic game, and the console ports were highly addictive. Diablo 4 has the potential to be amazing.
Remake: Jak and Daxter
We got Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank and Spyro remakes this gen, but no love for Jak and Daxter?
Sequel: God of War 2
Everyone needs more Dad of War.
