The Texans needed a replacement for the injured Will Fuller, but Thomas is not a like-for-like replacement. He is more of a DeAndre Hopkins-type receiver, who is best at winning 50/50 balls. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have two receivers who don't really need to separate to be considered open, but they're still missing the downfield element Fuller provided. Maybe rookie Keke Coutee, who ran a 4.4 40-yard dash, can fill that role out of the slot. And it's not like Houston gave up much for Thomas. If he's not a good fit in Houston, they can move on next offseason with no cap penalties. Denver, on the other hand, gets some cap relief and a pick equal in value to the one they would have received in 2021 had they let Thomas walk after next season.

The Eagles were desperate to add an offensive weapon at the deadline; and while Tate is certainly a weapon out of the slot, Philly was already getting solid production out of Nelson Agholor in that role. The Eagles parted ways with a third-round pick -- which the cap-strapped team could have used to continue to fill out the roster -- in order to marginally improve a position they were already solid at. Meanwhile, the Eagles are still in need of a starting running back, a field-stretching receiver and secondary help. Detroit was smart to unload Tate before he inevitably walked in free agency. It’s unlikely the Lions would have received anything more than a fifth-round compensatory pick for the free-agent-to-be, so getting a third-round pick for him, as well as nearly $4 million cap savings, has to be considered a major win.

If you had to pick out one weakness on the Redskins defense, it would have been the free safety position, where 2017 draft pick Montae Nicholson has been inconsistent. Replacing him with Clinton-Dix should shore up the backend of Washington’s defense. Nicholson still has a bright future with the team, but the Redskins have a legitimate shot at winning the division and are clearly taking it. Even if this ends up being a half-year rental -- Clinton-Dix will be a free agent after the season -- Washington should pick up a fourth-round compensatory pick if their newest safety signs for big money in the offseason. As for Green Bay, Clinton-Dix was probably gone after the season, and the Packers were able to pick up a draft pick in the upcoming draft. The team is high on Josh Jones, who could see more snaps now that Clinton-Dix is out of the picture. Still, that’s not a lot of value for a former first-round pick who has played well throughout his career.

The Rams are pulling out all the stops to maximize their Super Bowl window while Jared Goff is on a rookie deal. The NFL’s lone undefeated team does not have a lot of weaknesses, but edge rusher was considered one of them. Fowler, the 2015 third-overall pick, hasn’t been very productive throughout his career, and lost snaps as a result, but he does perform well in ESPN’s “pass rush win percentage” metric and has earned one of the league’s best pass rushing grades from Pro Football Focus. With more playing time in Los Angeles, Fowler could break out -- especially with opposing offensive lines focused on Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh. Jacksonville is giving up a player with some talent, but it was made clear Fowler had no future with the team after it declined to pick up his fifth-year option in the offseason. The Jaguars have to be happy to be getting two picks in return for him.
