Former Masters champion Zach Johnson isn’t going to pretend he didn’t drop a loud expletive during his Friday round at Augusta. He just thinks fans have the wrong idea about the intent behind it.

The 2023 US Ryder Cup captain had just made a triple bogey on No. 12 when the patrons Amen Corner began a sarcastic cheer for him finally getting off the green. Mics then picked up Johnson turning and yelling “Oh, [expletive] off,” as he chucked his ball aside.
Johnson has been hearing it from golf fans since the Ryder Cup, with many U.S. supporters blaming his decisions as captain as the reason the Americans were trounced by Europe.
This wouldn’t be the first time Johnson has gotten into it with spectators this season following an incident at February’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Yet the golfer denied that’s what happened on Friday.
After finishing his second round — and missing the cut by one stroke at seven-over-par — Johnson was asked to clarify what fans saw and heard.
“I swore at the patrons? That’s laughable. That’s completely laughable. I can’t hear the patrons, number one. Number two, I just made a triple bogey on the 12th hole that evidently is going to make me miss the cut, which at the time I knew was pretty sensitive in the sense that I needed to keep making pars,” Johnson told the media.
“If I’ve said anything, which I’m not going to deny, especially if it’s on camera, one, I apologize, and two, it was fully directed towards myself entirely because I can’t hear anything behind me. Does that make sense?”
Johnson added he hasn’t been on social media and isn’t aware of the fan response following the Ryder Cup.
Either way, the video isn’t a great look for the former Masters champ who’s now missed the cut in three of his last four starts at Augusta.
