2024 Masters betting notebook: Helpful tips from bookmakers

It’s a tradition unlike any other: The 2024 Masters is finally here. There are a myriad of betting storylines to follow this week at Augusta and For The Win asked several bookmakers to help us with what you should know before placing your bets — and things to watch for throughout the week.

Masters Leaderboard: Live leaderboard, Schedule, Tee times

Here is your 2024 Masters betting notebook:

It’s all about Tiger Woods

Whenever Tiger Woods plays in a golf tournament these days, it’s news … and it’s even more magnified at The Masters. Woods has triple-digit odds at sportsbooks, including 140-1 at DraftKings and 125-1 at BetMGM, which represent his longest odds ever at the Masters in his career.

Despite — or perhaps, because of — those long odds, Woods is the biggest liability to win the tournament at multiple sportsbooks.

“Before we opened the final field of golfers, Woods was our worst result by far,” Tristan Davis, senior trading manager at BetMGM, told For The Win. “We expect him to be the biggest liability on Thursday morning.”

At BetMGM, Woods wasn’t among the top-five most-bet golfers in total wagers or handle to win The Masters, but was still the biggest liability due to the long-shot odds.

“Our largest liability is, of course, Tiger,” Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk at SuperBook Sports told For The Win. “When he plays, the handle goes up. Everything on Tiger is getting action and every year we have liability, it’s just a matter of how much it’s going to be.”

Multiple sportsbooks reported a ton of action on the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson matchup prop, with Mickelson becoming an increasingly large favorite.

“The Tiger-Phil matchup has been very popular,” Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata told For The Win. “Phil opened a -115 favorite, now up to -145 and he’s taken the majority of the action.”

Scottie Scheffler a rare favorite

Scheffler is currently a +400 favorite to win The Masters at DraftKings Sportsbook, which is the shortest odds for any player since Tiger Woods had +350 odds all the way back in 2013.

“Scheffler has us in the red, but nothing really notable,” Davis said. “He probably has too short a price and he’s won so many tournaments this year. To be 4-1 to win a major is ridiculously short.”

Scheffler had the most total wagers (14.5 percent) and total dollars wagered (19.2 percent) at BetMGM sportsbooks nationwide.

Complicating factors even more for bettors is the fact that Scheffler’s wife (and Sam Burn’s wife) are due any day and Scheffler has said he’ll withdraw from the tournament if his wife goes into labor.

At most sportsbooks, all bets are action once Scheffler tees off on Thursday.
