The 2023 US Open has, for the most part, lived up to the hype in a new primetime format. And by “hype,” I also mean a notoriously difficult course that even some of the best golfers in the world sometimes have no answer for.
But entering Sunday’s final round, some familiar faces dotted the top of the leaderboard. With 18 holes to go, Rickie Fowler is tied with Wyndham Clark at -10 for the lead. Just behind the pair is Rory McIlroy, off by a stroke at -9. And despite Fowler’s status as a more-than-worthy opponent capable of winning his first-ever major, the betting market doesn’t see the American coming out on top when the dust settles.
Oddsmakers with DraftKings have painted McIlroy — who hasn’t won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship — as the new favorite to win this year’s U.S. Open. The North Irish golfer has healthy +200 odds to finally get a nearly-decade-old monkey off his back.
Of course, being the favorite with 18 holes remaining is very different from being the winner once the sun finally sets at The Los Angeles Country Club. Especially for someone like McIlroy, who has been in these advantageous positions over the years but hasn’t been able to close.
Sunday could finally be McIlroy’s long-awaited moment of glory.
