On paper, the Denver Nuggets are better than the Miami Heat. So, we shouldn’t necessarily raise an eyebrow at anyone picking them to win Game 3 of the NBA Finals Wednesday night in Miami — including yours truly.
But one fan with Caesars Sportsbook might be taking reasonable confidence in the Nuggets snatching back homecourt advantage way too far. As Denver and Jamal Murray prepare for a stiff road test against Jimmy Butler, a bettor put down almost $3.5 million (!!!) on the Nuggets, both in winning Game 3 and the first half of Game 3.
At the risk of being hyperbolic, I cannot emphasize this enough: I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an overzealous wager like this on a single game.
One bettor @CaesarsSports just dropped $3.5M on the Nuggets tonight 😳
💰 $2.75M to win $2.5M on Nuggets (-2.5)
💰 $750K to win $681.8K on Nuggets 1H (-1) pic.twitter.com/oi0fq28HVx— Action Network (@ActionNetworkHQ) June 7, 2023
Again, I understand how good the Nuggets are. I can respect anyone expecting them to rebound from their first home loss all postseason. But $3.5 million is absurd. This bettor is either obscenely wealthy — a likely possibility — or just used an exorbitant amount of their savings on the Western Conference champs. It’s patently absurd.
Either way, this bettor’s wager alone almost moved the Game 3 line with Caesars from -3.5 to 2.5 … by itself!
For this person’s sake, I hope the Nuggets come through with a huge victory. Because I don’t know how anyone could stomach losing this much money on a mid-series Finals game.
