WrestleMania 40 Night 2: Live results, highlights, match grades

The Rock and Roman Reigns prevailed on Saturday night in their main event against Cody Rhodes, giving Reigns a significant advantage on Night 2. Sunday’s main event will be held under Bloodline Rules, but can Rhodes finally complete his story and capture the WWE Undisputed Universal title?

Sunday’s match card is stacked. Iyo Sky will defend her Women’s Championship against Bayley, and Seth Rollins put his World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Drew McIntyre.

Night 2 of WrestleMania 40 will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 6th, on Peacock (sign up here).

Check back throughout the night for all the latest live highlights, match recap and grades from Night 2 of WrestleMania 40 on Sunday.

The War and Treaty opens Night 2 with God Bless America

God Bless America, a WrestleMania tradition, was absent from Night 1, but duo The War and Treaty delivered an awesome rendition to kick off Sunday night.

CM Punk also made an entrance to join as a special commentator for the opening bout.

Stephanie McMahon also made an appearance before the opening entrances. McMahon lauded the start of the “Paul Levesque era,” a nod to her husband Triple H.

World Heavyweight Champiosnship: Drew McIntyre defeats Seth Rollins to win the title

It was a very musical opening to WrestleMania 40. Drew McIntyre got an entire band of bagpipes to play him down to the ring, while Seth Rollins had a huge group of Philadelphia Mummers playing his theme.

Seconds after the opening bell, McIntyre hit a Claymore and very nearly scored a pinfall that would have rivaled The Rock’s six-second win.

Rollins escaped outside the ring to buy himself time, but the damage he suffered on Saturday night was immediately apparent. Rollins delivered a Pedigree on the floor, but his left knee buckled during the move.

Rollins rallied inside the ring, reversing an attempted Claymore, then hitting another Pedigree and a stomp on McIntyre, who was able to kick out.

The action earned a “This is awesome” chant from the Philly crowd. McIntyre, who injured CM Punk at the Royal Rumble, took the time to taunt Punk with the “go to sleep” gesture before trying to hit the move on Rollins, who avoided it.

McIntyre went outside the ring and cleared off the announce table. McIntyre tried to powerbomb Rollins through the table, but the champ was able to reverse the move. Clearly favoring his bad knee, Rollins jumped from the Spanish announce table to the main announce table to hit a stomp on McIntyre, but once back inside the ring McIntyre hit yet another Claymore.

Rollins kicked out, but after another vicious Claymore to the face, McIntyre scored the pinfall to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

In a very nice personal moment after the match, Rollins pointed at McIntyre as he made his way up the ramp and said “you deserve it.”

Match grade: 4.0/5

After the match, McIntyre came over to the announce table to talk to CM Punk. We couldn’t hear what was said on the broadcast, but things quickly turned hostile between the two, with McIntyre standing over CM Punk and delivering the DX “suck it” gesture.

CM Punk then knocked McIntyre down onto the table, ripped off his elbow brace and began pummeling McIntyre.

Damian Priest cashes in Money In The Bank contract, wins World Heavyweight Championship

A stunner in Philly.

Just as CM Punk was battering McIntyre at ringside, Priest’s music hit and he ran down the ramp with his Money in the Bank briefcase.

After smashing McIntyre over the head outside the ring, Samantha Irvin announced the new match, and seconds later Priest was the new champion.

Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits defeat The Final Testament

So what is a Philadelphia Street Fight anyway? It’s anything goes, no count outs, no disqualifications.

WWE Hall of Famer Snoop Dogg made his way down to the ring to serve as a guest commentator.

Snoop was followed by a surprise guest referee, WWE and ECW legend Bubba Ray Dudley.

It didn’t take long for weapons to be introduced. The Final Testament broke out a trio of Kendo sticks and battered Bobbly Lashley and the Street Profits.

This felt like a classic Attitude Era hardcore match that the Dudley Boyz might have competed in 20 years ago. Scarlett and B-Fab went through a table, Montez Ford launched himself off the top turnbuckle and nearly landed over the barrier, and Snoop Dogg delivered hilarious one-liners on commentary.

Karrion Kross started to pick a fight with Bubba Ray, who put on his classic glasses and started orchestrating the action for The Pride.

After a table malfunction, Kross received a huge splash through the table and Lashley scored the pinfall.

This was mindless fun, but every WrestleMania needs a bit of that.

Match grade: 3/5

LA Knight defeats AJ Styles

AJ Styles debuted a polarizing new entrance theme for WrestleMania 40.

The crowd was fully behind Knight in Philly, screaming “Yeah!” every time Knight landed a shot on Styles.

After a fairly even start, LA Knight hit a spectacular Avalanche German suplex from the top rope that Styles was able to kick out of.

Styles rallied and locked in the Calf Crusher for an extended period, and continued to work on the legs of Knight on the ring post.

LA Knight pulled up the padding on the floor outside the ring, but Styles reversed Knight’s attempted move and delivered a back body drop on the exposed floor.

AJ Styles attempted a springboard 450 off the ropes, but Knight was able to get his knees up in time to rock Styles’ ribs.

Styles tried to end the match with a Phenomenal Forearm, but Knight tripped up Styles on the ropes, then hit a BFT to end the match.

Styles gave a great performance, but this was an average match on a WrestleMania stage.

Match grade: 3/5

WWE United States Championship: Logan Paul defeats Kevin Owens and Randy Orton to retain his title

After a very long wait for the next match, Logan Paul made his way to the ring in a truck, accompanied by a walking Prime bottle, to defend his United States title against two WWE vets.

One night after he pumped up Sami Zayn before Zayn dethroned Gunther for the Intercontinental title, Kevin Owens was met by Zayn behind the curtain, who returned the favor.

Owens drove to the ring in a golf cart, then reversed and gave Randy Orton a ride to ringside.

Owens and Orton allied at the start of the match to try and take out Paul, repeatedly dropping him onto the Spanish announce table.

When both Owens and Orton went to pin a battered Paul for the first time, the two men suddenly remembered they were in a triple-threat match, and only one could win. A brawl then broke out between Orton and Owens while Paul recovered.

Owens engineered the best early chance to win, hitting a top-rope powerslam and going back up to the top turnbuckle to deliver a moonsault to Paul, who was able to kick out at two.

Logan Paul rocked Randy Orton with a pair of brass knuckles, but Orton somehow kicked out despite being knocked out.

Paul lined up a second punch to Orton’s head, but the Viper responded with an RKO before Paul could land his punch.

Orton was about to punt Paul’s head into Row G, but the Prime bottle pulled Paul out of the ring. Orton responded by delivering an RKO to the man in the bottle, who happened to be YouTuber IShowSpeed.

When the action returned to the ring, Owens hit a Stunner on Orton, who then reversed a pop-up powerbomb attempt with an RKO on Owens. Paul threw Orton onto the ring, and then hit Owens with a frog splash off the top turnbuckle, pinning Owens to retain the title.

Match grade: 3.5/5

WWE Women's Championship: Bayley defeats Iyo Sky to win the title

In one of the cooler entrances of the night, Bayley was carried out to the top of the stage like an Egyptian goddess, debuting a new theme.

Iyo Sky went to work early on Bayley’s right knee, trying to damage a leg that has plagued Bayley in her career.

The crowd tried to help rally the challenger, chanting “Let’s go Bayley,” and she gained control of the match outside of the ring, reversing an attempt by a flying Iyo Sky off the ringside barrier and slamming her to the floor.

Bayley scored a near-fall after a beautiful sunset flip into the bottom turnbuckle, but Sky recovered and got a near-fall of her own with a bridging German suplex pin attempt.

Sky appeared to have the match won, hitting a backbreaker on Bayley before unleashing another moonsault from the top rope, but Bayley was able to kick out.

Bayley turned the tide with a nasty clothesline, then followed with a huge elbow from the top rope and a Rose Plant to finish off Iyo Sky and claim the women’s title.

Overall a solid match, and Bayley gets her WrestleMania moment in a singles match.

Match grade: 4/5

Snoop Dogg returns to announce the attendance number

Snoop Dogg was joined by the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader and mascot in the ring to announce the Night 2 attendance figure: 72,755.

WWE Undisputed Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes

The main event is finally here. Cody Rhodes made a special entrance, accompanied by his wife Brandi, before the lights went out and “Kingdom” hit.

Shortly afterward, Reigns was played out by a local orchestra.

Following another sensational intro from Samantha Irvin (give her a raise, Triple H), the match began with a staredown between the two superstars, and an old-school ring circle and lockup.

Taking advantage of Bloodline Rules, Rhodes quickly took the opportunity to look under the ring and drag out a table, but Reigns knocked him down and shoved the table back under the ring, to the dismay of the Philly crowd.

Reigns scored the first shots with a Kendo stick, welting the back of Rhodes.

Rhodes recovered, hit a Ric Flair “Woo!” and locked Reigns into a figure four in the center of the ring.

The action spilled out of the ring, where Reigns tried to hit Rhodes with a giant Prime bottle (and appeared to miss) before tossing Rhodes over the barricade and fighting in the crowd.

Reigns got Rhodes atop a table and tried to suplex him, but Rhodes reversed with a suplex of his own.

Reigns trash talked Rhodes when the action got back inside the ring and took control of the match.

Rhodes rallied and hit a Disaster Kick, but Reigns kicked out immediately after a one count. Reigns retaliated by hitting Rhodes with his own move, the Cross Rhodes, but Cody was able to kick out. Reigns then had a conversation with Paul Heyman, saying he just wanted to “shove it in his face.”

Interestingly, The Rock and every other member of The Bloodline has not yet appeared through the first 20 minutes of the match, but that feels inevitable.

Rhodes cleared off the U.S. announce table, but Reigns hit Rhodes with a low blow and then powerbombed him through the table. Reigns rolled Rhodes into the ring, hit a Superman Punch for good measure, but only got a two count from referee Charles Robinson.

Rhodes scored the next two near falls, off a picture-perfect Cody Cutter, and later a spear. Just as Rhodes was about to hit a second consecutive Cross Rhodes, Jimmy Uso jumped in the ring to hit Rhodes with a Superkick and save Reigns.

Just as it seemed that The Bloodline had the upperhand, Jey Uso made a surprise entrance and speared Jimmy off the stage and onto tables below.

Rhodes speared Reigns through the barricade outside the ring, sparking “this is awesome” chants in Philly.

Back inside the ring, Rhodes hit Reigns with two consecutive Cross Rhodes, only for Solo Sikoa to show up and level Rhodes and drag Reigns over his body.

Rhodes managed to kick out, but still faced a 2-on-1 situation. Sikoa held Rhodes in place to allow Reigns to spear him, but Rhodes somehow still kicked out.

Stunningly, John Cena’s music hit, and he stormed to the ring and demolished Solo Sikoa before hitting an Attitude Adjustment on Reigns. Cena cleared the Spanish announce table and delivered another Attitude Adjustment on Sikoa through the table – only for The Rock to show up.

Cena and The Rock met at the center of the ring and recreated an iconic moment from The Rock’s match with Hulk Hogan, trading looks to either side of the crowd, before The Rock hit a Rock Bottom on Cena.

In another twist, The Shield music hit, and after a delay, Seth Rollins entered the ring in his classic Shield gear but was intercepted by a Superman Punch from Reigns.

Then…. THE UNDERTAKER? The gong hit and the lights went out, and The Undertaker appeared directly behind The Rock. After a chokeslam to The Great One, the lights went out again, and when they came back up, both men had vanished from the ring.

Reigns held a steel chair, but instead of attacking Rhodes, he took a shot at the back of Rollins. Rhodes used the advantage to gain control and hit three successive Cross Rhodes on Reigns, scoring the pinfall to complete his story in incredible fashion.

Cody Rhodes is the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Match Grade: 5/5

An all-time WrestleMania classic, and a fitting end to a phenomenal story. Stunning returns that didn’t overshadow and only added to what was an epic match between Rhodes and Reigns.
