The Super Bowl is the biggest sports betting event every year, and with Super Bowl 58 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, this one will be no different.
With sports betting now legal in 38 states, along with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, this will likely be the most-bet NFL game ever in U.S. legal sports betting history.
Last year, Nevada sportsbooks won $5.5 million off of $153.2 million wagered on the Big Game. How much will be wagered this year? Las Vegas oddsmakers are expecting a record handle.
In this running file, I’ll keep track of the movement on the total and spread for the Super Bowl, along with the notable wagers to come in.

Sunday, Feb. 11: A plethora of Super Bowl betting updates

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)
-Happy Sunday Bowl Sunday! Several Las Vegas books were at 49ers -1.5 on Sunday morning, including the South Point. South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews told For The Win that the move was due to “accumulation” of bets and that if the game kicked off right now, he’d be rooting for the 49ers to cover.
-The majority of bets and money at DraftKings, Fanatics, BetMGM and several other sportsbooks was on the Chiefs to cover, despite the five biggest bets coming in on the 49ers moneyline or spread
Here are the five most-bet player props by ticket count at BetMGM, as of Sunday morning:
- Brock Purdy over 11.5 rushing yards (-120)
- Isiah Pacheco over 66.5 rushing yards (-140)
- Travis Kelce over 69.5 receiving yards (-135)
- Brock Purdy over 0.5 interception (-135)
- Patrick Mahomes over 25.5 rushing yards (-125)
-The second of what’s expected to be several seven-figure wagers came in at PointsBet, with one bettor wagering $1 million on the 49ers -2 (-110)
-We’ve seen several seven-figure wagers at Circa Sports in Las Vegas. One is on the Chiefs +2 and one is for $1.1M for a bettor who says he’ll reveal the side he wagered on after kickoff. Jeff Benson, sportsbook director, told For The Win on Sunday afternoon that the book still needed the Chiefs a few hours before kickoff.
-A bettor at Circa wagered $100,000 on Christian McCaffrey to score a touchdown at -235 odds

-From Vegas oddsmaker Jay Kornegay on the Super Bowl action at SuperBook Sports: “We have 75 percent of the bets on the game on Kansas City, but most of the larger bets are on San Fran. We need the 49ers right now, but not for too much.”
Saturday, Feb. 10: Notable wagers keep coming in

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)
We’re roughly 24 hours away from the Big Game and the big money is still coming in on the 49ers … but the public bettors are on the Chiefs. The top 10 biggest reported wagers are all on San Francisco, as of Saturday afternoon, including the $1 million bet on the 49ers moneyline that was placed last week. Despite all of those big bets, 78 percent of the overall spread handle at BetMGM and 65 percent of the overall spread handle at DraftKings was on Kansas City to cover.
The 10 biggest reported #SuperBowl bets so far:

-Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata in New Jersey, told me that they’re “probably writing 10 Travis Kelce over tickets (you pick the prop) to every one under bet we write.” Sportsbooks will lose if Kelce has a good game, and especially if he wins MVP.
-From a FanDuel sportsbook trader on Friday afternoon: “We have taken almost eight times as many bets on the Chiefs ML than the 49ers. The spread has also been skewed to a lesser degree with almost three times as many bets on the Chiefs than the 49ers.”
-The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook took its largest Super Bowl wager to date on Saturday: $215,000 on 49ers ML -130, according to Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk at the company
Thursday, Feb. 1: Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook releases over 500 props
-The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook released over 500 props at 5 p.m. PT on Thursday night. You can read more about some of the more interesting ones in this article I wrote right here.
-The SuperBook told For The Win that it took a $110,000 wager on 49ers -1 earlier in the week, which helped push the line to 49ers -1.5. That was followed by another respected “five-figure” wager at 49ers -1.5 to push it to the current line of 49ers -2.
-From one respected bettor For The Win spoke with on Thursday night: “For me, it’s Chiefs or pass. I didn’t bet it yet — maybe I should’ve attacked the lookahead line of Kansas City +3. Sharps are liking San Francisco for some reason.”
Wednesday, Feb. 7: Big 49ers bets keep coming

(Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports)
-The public is still all over the Chiefs, with 66 percent of bets and 63 percent of the money on Kansas City +2 at DraftKings Sportsbook, but the big bets have been on the 49ers to win.
-One bettor at DraftKings Sportsbook wagered $500,000 on the 49ers ML at -125 odds and a different bettor at Caesars had a $500,000 wager on the 49ers ML as well (also at -125 odds)
-The three biggest reported wagers are all on the 49ers so far
Monday, Feb. 5: Travis Kelce MVP liability starting to add up
-Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce opened with 125-1 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII MVP and now is only 14-1 at BetMGM books. Despite the fact that no tight end has ever won NFL MVP, Kelce has the most bets (15 percent) of any player to win the MVP and the second-most dollars wagered (15.2 percent). “He’s our biggest liability,” BetMGM trader Christian Cippolini told For The Win.
-One bettor at Caesars in Nevada wagered $100 on the Chiefs to score exactly two points in Sunday’s Super Bowl at 10,000-1 odds. The bet would win a cool $1 million if Kansas City only records a safety.
Monday, January 29: A Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce proposal prop emerges
-Rules for Super Bowl proposition wagering are different at legal U.S. sportsbooks versus Canada and offshore. In the United States, prop bets need to be decided on the field of play; Canada has a different set of rule, which led to FanDuel Canada offering this Super Bowl 58 prop, available for betting in Ontario:
Will Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift on the field after Super Bowl 58?
The “yes” was +190 when I saw the prop on Monday afternoon and the “no” was -250.
Will Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift on the field after #SuperBowlLVIII?
Yes, that prop is now available for betting at @FanDuelCanada:

No -250 pic.twitter.com/8lDAmYKCgg— Ben Fawkes (@BFawkes22) January 29, 2024
Less than 30 minutes after the above post on X, the odds were +1120 for “yes” and -3500 for “no.” A FanDuel representative confirmed that the maximum wager was $100 Canadian Dollars.
-The first reported six-figure wager on the Super Bowl came in at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas: $105,000 on the 49ers -1

Sunday 1/28
-Caesars Sportsbook was the first legal sportsbook to open a Super Bowl line on Sunday night, opening at 49ers -2 with a total of 47.5. The line quickly moved down to 49ers -1.5 before settling at 49ers -1.
“We’ve seen a good stream of Chiefs money so far,” Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading at Caesars Sportsbook told For The Win on Sunday night. “Whenever the spread is this close, you’re likely to have good two-way action. We’re heading towards pick-em, we’ll see if we get there.”
-The best-case scenario for Caesars from a futures book perspective would be a Chiefs win.
-Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at the Borgata in Atlantic City, told For The Win that he opened 49ers -2.5 and was down to -1.5 late Sunday night due to “early Chiefs money, but mostly moving with the market.”
-FanDuel Sportsbook was the only sportsbook I saw that opened 49ers -3, which was quickly snapped up.
