By now, Patrick Mahomes has established a strong reputation for the unbelievable. As the NFL’s best and most creative quarterback, Mahomes will seemingly try every pass and will almost never say die on a play — even in the preseason.
As the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Arizona Cardinals Saturday, Mahomes used the opportunity the way you’d expect. If these exhibitions are supposed to be tune-ups for the real show, Mahomes understandably tried something he’d likely also attempt in a real game.
When Arizona’s defense flushed Mahomes out of the pocket to his right, he probably should’ve just run out of bounds. The key word there is should’ve. Instead, the reigning MVP and Super Bowl MVP leaped over the boundary and tried a surprise pass while literally hovering out of bounds. Even on an eventual incompletion, this was pretty impressive.
Of course, we’ve seen Mahomes do this before, but on a much, much bigger stage.

It goes to show you that even when the action doesn’t count, Mahomes will still pull out all the stops. Don’t be surprised when he tries this “magic trick” at some point during the actual 2023 season.
