Every NFL players suspended for gambling in league history

It’s been decades in which NFL players have been not allowed to bet on their own games.

And even after the United States Supreme Court decision that ultimately let states legalize sports betting back in 2018, NFL players were still not allowed to bet on their league’s games.

There were, however, rules put into place about betting on sports in general. And that’s what brings us to this post: A look at the players suspended before and after 2018 due to gambling infractions.

We’ll update this list when discipline is handed down.

Alex Karras, 1963

Yes, that Alex Karras, the defensive tackle for the Lions who ended up acting in Webster. In 1963, Karras got suspended for a full season by then-commissioner Pete Rozelle because Karras made some bets on games.

Rozelle also suspended Hornung for betting on NFL games — he gambled “as much as $500,” per USA TODAY Sports.

Rozelle suspended the QB because, as USA TODAY Sports noted, “he reportedly lost $389,000 to Baltimore-area bookies.”

Josh Shaw, 2019

Shaw, while injured in 2019, bet on NFL games while he was with the Arizona Cardinals. He was suspended for a full year.

Ridley got a season-long suspension and was eventually reinstated after he violated the NFL’s rules against betting.

The receiver was suspended for just six games because he placed mobile bets while at the Lions’ facility.

Moore received an indefinite suspension for infractions that included betting on NFL games. He was then released by the Lions

The Tennessee Titans tackle announced on June 29 that he’d been suspended for six games for betting on sports while at his team’s facility.

Another former Detroit Lion earned an indefinite suspension for gambling on NFL games in Taylor, who is currently a free agent after being released in May.
