Week 1 didn’t go as planned for the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears and a solid half of the league.
You can include the majority of For The Win’s NFL crew in that group because plenty of lumps were handed out as we tried to pick winners against the spread and start Week 1 off with a profit.
Only Prince Grimes walked away from the first week of the season with a winning record — though Christian D’Andrea pulled off a more than respectable 8-8 week given what happened to the rest of us.
But the season is long and our memories our short so we’re back at it again for Week 2. Here’s who we’re rolling with.
Name | Record |
Prince Grimes | 10-6 |
Christian D’Andrea | 8-8 |
Robert Zeglinski | 7-9 |
Charles Curtis | 7-9 |
Caroline Darney | 4-12 |
Blake Schuster | 4-12 |
Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Eagles -7
Schuster: Eagles -6.5
Always fade Primetime Kirk Cousins, even when his opponent isn’t a Top 3 NFC team.
Grimes: Vikings +6.5
I’ll probably regret picking against the Eagles again, but Thursday night games are weird. Eagles win this one by 6.
Curtis: Eagles -6.5
I was all set to take the points and then I remembered Kirk Cousins turns into a pumpkin when the moon rises.
Darney: Eagles -6.5
Things didn’t look super great in Week 1, but neither did the Vikings and I still like Hurts & Co. this season.
Zeglinski: Eagles -6.5
The Vikings are about to get embarrassed on national TV.
D’Andrea: Eagles -6.5
The Vikings aren’t as listless as their Week 1 performance suggests. Bad news: neither are the Eagles.
Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Chiefs -3
Schuster: Chiefs -3
I just can’t fathom the Chiefs starting 0-2 and for that reason I see them going all out in Jacksonville. Especially is Kelce is back in action.
Grimes: Jaguars +3
The Chiefs are pissed. Too bad. Jaguars pull off the early upset at home.
Curtis: Chiefs -3
I would love to back T-Law and that balanced Jaguars attack, but I can’t see the Chiefs starting 0-2, especially with Travis Kelce maybe back and Chris Jones returning.
Darney: Chiefs -3
Kelce returning with Taylor Swift rumors fueling him? No way the Chiefs look that bad in two straight games.
Zeglinski: Jaguars +3
Chris Jones is back but this Chiefs team doesn’t have the horses to keep up with Trevor Lawrence.
D’Andrea: Jaguars +3
Three of Trevor Lawrence’s four wins over opponents with winning records last season came at home.
Las Vegas Raiders at Buffalo Bills

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Bills -8
Schuster: Raiders +9.5
Josh Allen is going to keep giving defenses a chance to make plays on him and the Raiders have the run game to make this one pretty ugly. Bills win but the question marks in Buffalo remain.
Grimes: Raiders +9.5
I’m not worried about Josh Allen in this one. I am a little worried about Buffalo’s run defense after Breece Hall just torched them in his first game back from surgery.
Curtis: Bills -9.5
Slightly hesitant given what we saw on Monday, but I can’t talk myself into the Raiders doing much against a Buffalo team with something to prove.
Darney: Bills -9.5
Mr. Allen, don’t make me regret this.
Zeglinski: Bills -9.5
I feel so bad for the Raiders going against an angry Terminator QB.
D’Andrea: Bills -9.5
The Raiders don’t have the secondary to send Josh Allen back to 2018 for a second straight week.
Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals
Opening Line: Bengals -3.5
Schuster: Ravens +3.5
I like Baltimore by the hook because this one should be pretty close. We need to see Joe Burrow turn back into, well, himself, before I blindly start taking the Bengals again.
Grimes: Ravens +3.5
Close game like everyone else said. Plus, it took the Bengals more than a week to turn things around last season.
Curtis: Ravens +3.5
Gotta see more out of Joe Burrow after last week, but this is more about a divisional matchup that should be close.
Darney: Ravens +3.5
I don’t think Joe Burrow has a repeat performance, but things don’t get easier this week as they face the Ravens. Granted, Lamar Jackson didn’t blow anyone out of the water, but I’m concerned about Cincy.
Zeglinski: Bengals -3.5
The games in this rivalry are traditionally very close and I can’t see Cincinnati starting 0-2 in the AFC North at home.
D’Andrea: Ravens +3.5.
Two evenly matched teams. I like the Bengals more, but I’ll take the points.
Los Angeles Chargers at Tennessee Titans

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Chargers -3.5
Schuster: Chargers -3
This line is too good to be true. Where’s the other shoe?
Grimes: Titans +3
No matter how good you or I think the Chargers are, they always seem to make things harder than they should be.
Curtis: Chargers -3
Come on, Chargers. Win a close game, will you?
Darney: Titans +3
Close line with the Chargers, eh, no thank you.
Zeglinski: Chargers -3
If Justin Herbert and Co. can’t beat a mediocre Titans team, just fold up shop right now. Don’t play the rest of the season.
D’Andrea: Chargers -3
Wait so oddsmakers think the Titans and Chargers are just about even on a neutral field? That is incorrect.
Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions

David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Lions -2.5
Schuster: Seahawks +5.5
There is too much positivity in Detroit right now. I don’t trust it.
Grimes: Seahawks +5.5: I feel like this line is a little bit of an overreaction to Week 1.
Curtis: Seahawks +5.5
A total overreaction line.
Darney: Seahawks +5.5
I was impressed with the Lions week one, but if they go 2-0, I think it’s by a field goal.
Zeglinski: Lions -5.5
Detroit is predictably one of the NFC’s best teams and should ride the energy of a raucous crowd at Ford Field.
D’Andrea: Seahawks +5.5
Pete Carroll is capable of adjustment. He’s gotta be after that Week 1 faceplant.
Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
Opening Line: Texans -1
Schuster: Texans +1.5
I like CJ Stroud. I trust DeMeco Ryans I think this team winds up squarely in the “not a pushover” camp pretty soon.
Grimes: Texans +1.5
Houston didn’t come close to beating Baltimore in Week 1 but I did come away impressed with how much more of a professional team they appeared to be under DeMeco Ryans.
Curtis: Colts -1.5
I’m an Anthony Richardson believer and the Colts will run all day.
Darney: Texans +1.5
Uh, sure.
Zeglinski: Texans +1.5
I like C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans more than Anthony Richardson and Shane Steichen. Sue me.
D’Andrea: Colts -1.5
The Colts aren’t good, but they aren’t quite Texans bad. I’m more excited about the QB battle than the actual outcome of the game here — which is probably how fans in Indianapolis and Houston feel, too.
Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons

(AP Photo/Matt Ludtke)
Opening Line: Falcons -1.5
Schuster: Packers +1.5
What trend do you think is more likely to continue: Good things happening to Green Bay quarterbacks or good things happening to the Atlanta Falcons?
Grimes: Falcons -1.5
I’m not confident the Falcons win, but I do think this game is a toss up and I’ll give it to the home team.
Curtis: Packers +1.5
I dig what I’m seeing from Jordan Love.
Darney: Packers +1.5
I…loved…what the Packers did Week 1. Please don’t boo me.
Zeglinski: Packers +1.5
Both Green Bay lines can bully anyone in the sport. Atlanta can’t hang with such a massive disadvantage in the trenches.
D’Andrea: Falcons -1.5
Atlanta wants to run the ball at you until you die. Green Bay’s fatal flaw in recent seasons has been its run defense. I think I see the problem.
Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Mark Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Bears -1.5
Schuster: Bears +3
That just can’t be the Bears team we spent all offseason hyping up. Let’s pretend that was a final tune up and the offense remembers to use DJ Moore.
Grimes: Buccaneers -3
Definitely a push.
Curtis: Buccaneers -3
Ugh, do I have to pick here? Fine.
Darney: Bears +3
Are the Bears actually that bad or was that a Packers jinx thing? I lean the latter.
Zeglinski: Bears +3
I don’t know, man. Justin Fields woooo … I guess?
D’Andrea: Buccaneers -3
Can I bet on a push? This feels like a push. 24-21, Tampa.
New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals

(AP Photo/Bryan Woolston)
Opening Line: Giants -4.5
Schuster: Giants -4.5
If Big Blue can’t cover this spread we need to really reevaluate the ceiling for New York here.
Grimes: Cardinals +4.5
The Giants will win, but the Cardinals were more competent than we thought they would be in Week 1. I could see a late cover for the home team.
Curtis: Giants -4.5
I really don’t know if this is a good idea after what we saw last week, but the Cardinals aren’t the Cowboys.
Darney: Giants -4.5
I will honestly be impressed if the Giants manage to get blanked again.
Zeglinski: Giants -4.5
Talk about a needed cupcake rebound for Brian Daboll’s boys.
D’Andrea: Giants -4.5.
Amazing get-right opportunity here. If New York doesn’t win, the Giants are bad-bad.
San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: 49ers -4.5
Schuster: Rams +8.5
The Rams don’t appear to be awful and asking the Niners to cover two scores in a rivalry game is a lot.
Grimes: Rams +8.5
A part of me wants to roll with the Niners because Kyle Shanahan has owned this rivalry, but the Rams are feeling themselves right now and I expect Sean McVay to put up a fight.
Curtis: Rams +8.5 I like what I saw out of Matthew Stafford. This game stays within seven points.
Darney: 49ers -8.5
Maybe I’m overreacting to the Steelers win, but San Fran looked Purdy, Purdy good (sorry, trying to delete).
Zeglinski: 49ers -8.5:
San Francisco will blow the doors off most opponents this fall, and Sean McVay’s Rams are no exception.
D’Andrea: Rams +8.5
That’s a lot of points to cover on the road in a division rivalry game.
Washington Commanders at Denver Broncos

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Broncos -3.5
Schuster: Commanders +3.5
At this point I’m more willing to back to Cardinals than the Broncos against the spread.
Grimes: Commanders +3.5
Neither team is winning this game by more than a field goal. I expect Denver to pull it out at home, but give me the points.
Curtis: Commanders +3.5
I’m going back to not trusting Russell Wilson until further notice.
Darney: Broncos -3.5
Too many of my lovely coworkers are picking the Commanders so, go Broncos.
Zeglinski: Commanders +3.5
Sean Payton’s seat is about to get very hot and the Broncos are about to realize Russell Wilson can’t be “fixed” if the offensive line can’t block.
D’Andrea: Commanders +3.5
Yeah right like I’m gonna trust the Broncos in a close game.
New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Cowboys -3
Schuster: Jets +9.5
We know the Jets can run the ball effectively and can frustrate opposing offenses like crazy. Sounds like a recipe for an ugly, close game in a Cowboys’ home opener where the fan expectations have to be soaring after routing the Giants in Week 1.
Grimes: Jets +9.5
Zach Wilson against Dallas’ defense is rough scene. But are we sure Dak Prescott against New York’s D will be much better?
Curtis: Jets +9.5
Believe in their defense, not in Zach Wilson. That’s enough to cover.
Darney: Cowboys -9.5
I don’t think Wilson will be THAT bad, but facing the Cowboys next…good luck.
Zeglinski: Cowboys -9.5
Are we sure Zach Wilson’s offense gains a single first down before the third quarter against this monstrous Dallas defense?
D’Andrea: Jets +9.5
I’m not betting against whatever lesser god of chaos has invested in New York this season. Cowboys 17, Jets 9.
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots

Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Dolphins -2.5
Schuster: Dolphins -2.5
The sensible pick is Patriots +2.5. We’re not being sensible. Gimmie Tyreek and Tua all day.
Grimes: Patriots +2.5
Pats get it done at home after playing the Eagles tough in Week 1.
Curtis: Dolphins -2.5
Tua may not throw for a billion yards again but a win by three isn’t a tall task.
Darney: Dolphins -2.5.
Sigh, this one feels like it could be a 3-point game either way.
Zeglinski: Dolphins -2.5
Cue the very early Bill Belichick retirement talks after an underwhelming Patriots team starts 0-2.
D’Andrea: Dolphins -2.5
The Patriots barely beat Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson last season. Now they’ve gotta deal with flamethrower Tua??? Besides Mac, uh…
Mac Jones and the Patriots are 2-12 as underdogs. Jones has one fourth-quarter comeback and game-winning drive on his resume.
Sunday’s game against the Dolphins will provide another chance for the Patriots QB to take the next step in his career.https://t.co/KJ6yBSM4do

New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Saints -1.5
Schuster: Saints -3
I expect the Panthers to play things pretty conservative with Bryce Young in these first few weeks. Let him establish some basic sets and then open things up later on. The Panthers are playing the long game. The Saints are playing for a division title.
Grimes: Panthers +3
Seeing a theme here? I’m just picking a ton of underdogs early in the season until we have a better sample size to lean on. Panthers defense will fluster Derek Carr and keep things tight.
Curtis: Saints +3
Another game i want nothing to do with.
Darney: Panthers +3
I rolled with Bryce Young in Week 1, and I’m gonna do it again.
Zeglinski: Saints -3
This New Orleans team is … kind of complete on paper. Carolina is not.
D’Andrea: Saints -3
The Carolina defense is pretty good. The Carolina offense is not.
Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports
Opening Line: Steelers -1
Schuster: Steelers +2.5
Oh boy, here I go betting on the Steelers as underdogs again. I can already see this team costing me so much money this season.
Grimes: Steelers +2.5
Can’t believe I’m going back to Pittsburgh after last week’s big letdown, but the Browns ain’t the 49ers.
Curtis: Steelers +2.5
I’m giving them one more shot as underdogs. Just one.
Darney: Browns -2.5
I’ll happily be wrong if it means the Steelers got their act together.
Zeglinski: Steelers +2.5
Pittsburgh hasn’t lost back-to-back home games to start a season in over five decades. It’s not going to break that incredible streak now.
D’Andrea: Steelers +2.5.
The Browns haven’t won a regular season game in Pittsburgh since 2003. Now they head there with a backup right tackle set to corral TJ Watt. Good luck!
