Monday was a head-spinning day in NFL quarterback job openings.
The Indianapolis Colts filled their starting job with a trade for Matt Ryan.
The Atlanta Falcons then replaced Ryan with Marcus Mariota (although will he be the starter this fall? We’ll see!).
The New Orleans Saints? They’re sticking with Jameis Winston, although they could draft their QB of the future in a month.
So you might be wondering which jobs are left open for a quarterback like Baker Mayfield if the Cleveland Browns end up trading him. That’s where this guide comes in, and we’ll update it as the jobs get filled.

Seattle Seahawks starter

CURRENT QBs: Drew Lock, Jacob Eason
I guess they could start Lock under center in 2022 … but unless a full on tank job is on, do they really want to stick with a guy who’s thrown 20 INTs in 24 games and just 25 touchdowns in his career? I’m declaring this job open still.

Panthers starter

CURRENT QBs: Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker
Do you go with the guy who was terrible last year or the former XFL standout who was basically the MVP there? Exactly.

Texans starter

CURRENT QBs: Davis Mills, Kyle Allen, Jeff Driskel
Quite a QB room there, and maybe the team is intrigued by Mills in a season when this team is going to be terrible.
But you just never know with this franchise. I’ll earmark this as open, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Mills taking snaps on opening day.

Falcons backup/starter

CURRENT QBs: Marcus Mariota, Feleipe Franks
I assume Marcus Mariota is the guy after the Falcons spent money on the former Raiders backup and 2015 second overall pick in the NFL draft. But … is he really THE guy? I wonder if the Falcons get someone of a similar ilk to compete with Mariota in camp.

Steelers backup/starter/QB of the future

CURRENT QBs: Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins
I mean … it’s Mitch Trubisky. This could go any number of ways, but I refuse to believe he’s the starter until I see it. My guess: The Steelers draft someone in the first round, but that quarterback might be the No. 2 or 3 QB on the depth chart this season.
6
Lions QB of the future

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports
Current QBs: Jared Goff, Tim Boyle, David Blough, Steven Montez
I’m pretty sure they’re fine with Goff as the starter, but another one where you never know, and the draft might be where they find another name to throw into the mix.
