The radio broadcasts for the New York Yankees are about to sound very different as the team announced Monday that longtime radio announcer John Sterling would be retiring, effective immediately.
The 85-year-old Sterling had been the team’s radio voice for 36 seasons — which included 5,060 consecutive games called — but is opting to retire as he has dealt with health issues the past couple years that limited his availability for road games. He also had his share of blunders in the booth in recent seasons.
Sterling will be replaced in the booth by Justin Shackil and Emmanuel Berbari, according to The Athletic. The team will also honor Sterling’s career with a ceremony on Saturday.
MLB fans wished Sterling well after the announcement and looked back at some of his memorable calls.
