Throughout the 2023 MLB season, BetFTW is keeping track of the Cy Young and MVP award leaders in both the American League and National League.
Every two weeks or so, we’re listing our top-five leaders for each award along with stats to support their award cases. We also include each player’s betting odds from DraftKings to win the award, though it’s important to remember odds often attempt to predict who finishes the year at the top based on previous expectations, and they adjust as the seasons goes. We simply tell you which players have been the best.
Here are this week’s top five.
American League MVP

1. P/DH Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels (-250)
.299 AVG | 52 RBI | 21 HR | 10 SB | 2.5 WAR
5-2 | 3.32 ERA | 12.1 K/9 | 1.7 WAR
Last ladder: 1st
Ohtani’s bat has made up for the recent declines in his pitching in a major way. In his last six games alone, he has 13 hits, 10 RBI and five home runs.
2. OF Aaron Judge, New York Yankees (+800)
.291 AVG | 40 RBI | 19 HR | 3 SB | 2.3 WAR
Last ladder: 2nd
Judge was injured just two games after the last ladder, so his numbers aren’t much different. But they were so good that he still holds steady at No. 2, with the only difference being a larger gap between himself and Ohtani at No. 1.
3. 2B Marcus Semien, Texas Rangers (+2500)
.286 AVG | 53 RBI | 10 HR | 7 SB | 3.1 WAR
Last ladder: 4th
Semien climbs one spot, though his batting average has tumbled 20 points over the last week. His bat might’ve come back alive Wednesday against the Angels when he went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his first long ball in 10 games.
4. OF Yordan Álvarez, Houston Astros (+7000)
.277 AVG | 55 RBI | 17 HR | 1.9 WAR
Last ladder: Not ranked
Álvarez returns to the ladder despite missing the last week of games mostly due to the declines in efficiency for other players whose counting stats don’t measure up to his 17 homers and 55 RBI, which rank second in the majors. Unfortunately, with news he’ll miss the next four weeks, they’ll have plenty of time to catch and pass him.
5. SS Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays (+3000)
.319 AVG | 44 RBI | 14 HR | 3 SB | 3.2 WAR
Last ladder: Not ranked
Bichette finally crack the top five for the first time thanks to an AL-best .319 batting average to go with some impressive power numbers, including a .508 slugging percentage.
National League MVP

1. OF Ronald Acuña Jr., Atlanta Braves (-140)
.333 AVG | 44 RBI | 15 HR | 29 SB | 3.7 WAR
Last ladder: 1st
After a brief chase from No. 2 Freddie Freeman, Acuña’s odds to win MVP are shortening again, dropping into the negatives. It’s no wonder why. In just his last five games, he’s 9-of-22 with 10 RBI and three homers, and he’s well on his way to joining the exclusive 40-40 club.
2. 1B Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers (+500)
.331 AVG | 44 RBI | 13 HR | 9 SB | 3.2 WAR
Last ladder: 2nd
Freeman’s failure to close the gap on Acuña this week is through no fault of his own. He continues to anchor this Dodgers lineup, posting numbers that are very similar wit the exception of more strikeouts and fewer stolen bases.
3. OF Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks (+1500)
.311 AVG | 35 RBI | 14 HR | 19 SB | 3.3 WAR
Last ladder: Not ranked
Forget Rookie of the Year, Carroll’s play is deserving of some MVP chatter now. He’s actually not all that far off the pace being set by Acuña and Freeman, which is incredible to say for a rookie.
4. OF Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers (+1000)
.263 AVG | 43 RBI | 17 HR | 5 SB | 3.0 WAR
Last ladder: Not ranked
Betts has been improving all year and makes his ladder debut as he’s hitting .311 with a 1.004 OPS since the start of June, including the eight-game hitting streak he’s currently on.
5. C Sean Murphy, Atlanta Braves (+4000)
.276 AVG | 42 RBI | 12 HR | 2.2 WAR
Last ladder: 5th
Murphy’s numbers (and odds) have dipped since the last ladder, but he holds steady at No. 5 ahead of Pete Alonso, who just couldn’t improve a low batting average before recently being ruled out for the next three-to-four weeks with a wrist injury.
