There have been a lot of spectacular dunkers — in-game and otherwise — in NBA history. Blake Griffin’s name undoubtedly belongs near the top of that list.
On Tuesday, the long-time forward officially retired from the NBA after 14 seasons and six All-Star selections. However, discussions about Griffin never had to do with his individual accolades or accomplishments. They usually started and ended with his trademark ferocious prowess around the rim, particularly during his 2009-2018 stint with the Los Angeles Clippers. Even to this day, some of Griffin’s most famous dunks still reverberate strongly in NBA history, if only because they remain so stunning to watch. Who knew people could jump this high and with this much power?
As one of the NBA’s greatest high-flyers ever walks away from the league, let’s rank Griffin’s cream-of-the-crop dunks from his career.

DeAndre Jordan couldn't believe what Griffin did to Kris Humphries, Clippers vs. Boston Celtics, January 8th, 2014

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
When they were together with the Clippers, Griffin’s and Jordan’s high-flying gifts helped coin the nickname “Lob City.” It seemed like every night, the two close teammates were trying to one-up each other with a dunk spectacle. On this occasion, Griffin’s vicious dunk on Boston’s Humphries from the outer paint circle immediately put Jordan in a state of disbelief. He has his hands up over his head nearly the moment he sees Griffin rise toward the rim. Griffin doing that for Jordan, a dunk aficionado, was usually very amusing.

Pau Gasol gets "acquainted" with Griffin, Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers, April 4th, 2012

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Gasol was one of the greatest big men of the modern era, a true anchor to two Lakers championship teams. Seeing Gasol ever get humbled by a better athlete was a very rare occasion during his Hall of Fame career. But going against someone as springy as Griffin tends to open the door to exceptions.

The car dunk, 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Context

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports
It takes a lot for me to be impressed by a dunk outside of a game context. It has to be creative. It has to have flair. It most definitely has to have a lot of “air,” if you know. Griffin’s dunk over a Kia sedan that won him the 2011 dunk contest certainly fits these parameters.

Dropping the hammer on Serge Ibaka, Clippers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder, April 11th, 2012

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports
Ibaka was an All-NBA caliber defender during his days in the league; he was legitimately one of the more feared rim protectors. That vaunted reputation appears to have just acted as a challenge for Griffin on this wild hammer dunk.

Spinning Danillo Gallinari into oblivion, Clippers vs. New York Knicks, November 20th, 2010

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Every famous Griffin dunk obviously required a tremendous amount of skill and natural ability. But running with the ball in transition, forcing Gallinari to take the strong shoulder, and then spinning into a tomahawk dunk is almost unfathomable skill-wise. I don’t think it’s the “best” dunk of Griffin’s career, but it might have been the most impressive to execute.

Kendrick Perkins learns challenging Griffin at the rim isn't worth it, Clippers vs. Thunder, January 30th, 2012

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
By the time Griffin humiliated Perkins with one of the best dunks we’ve ever seen, the Clippers were already demolishing the Thunder. That’s what makes Perkins’ jump into Griffin as he gets a wide-open bounce pass near the rim so funny to me. What did he think was going to happen? Was a hard foul really going to impede his progress? Like so many times in his career, Griffin was ready to put someone on a highlight reel the moment he saw the passing seam open.

Putting Timofey Mozgov on the map, Clippers vs. Knicks, November 20th, 2010

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
To this day, off the top of my head, I cannot think of a better live, in-game dunk than Griffin jumping straight over a 7-foot-1 Mozgov to throw the ball in. Griffin’s athleticism was always off the charts, but this particular dunk still always takes my breath away. It was so vicious that the somewhat unknown Mozgov almost became a household name expressly because Griffin put him on an all-time poster. Also, poor Knicks.
