Every team's top 2024 NFL Draft needs, post-free agency frenzy edition

The bulk of this spring’s impact free agent signings have already put pen to paper. It took less than a week to shake up rosters and irritate last year’s pecking order with an eye on Super Bowl 59.

We don’t know how those big name signings will unfold on the field, but we have a decent idea of how they’ve changed franchise’s wish lists headed into the 2024 NFL Draft. The Atlanta Falcons patched up their biggest weakness while creating one for the Minnesota Vikings, who now have to find a new quarterback after Kirk Cousins’ departure. The Las Vegas Raiders no longer need a gap-clogging defensive lineman after signing Christian Wilkins but could still use help in the secondary behind him. The Kansas City Chiefs added Marquise Brown in free agency, but still have room for a dynamic deep threat in their passing game.

These moves have helped turn some “needs” into “wants” when it comes to this year’s crop of rookies. So what will all 32 teams be looking for at this year’s draft? Let’s run down the list in alphabetical order.

Arizona Cardinals

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: EDGE, WR, CB, LB, DL, IOL

2024’s free agent class brought some low cost, common sense additions in Jonah Williams, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Justin Jones. This Cardinals team still badly needs talent just about everywhere, however — particularly after losing Marquise Brown to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Atlanta Falcons

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: EDGE, DT, CB, LB

Kirk Cousins’ arrival solves a major need and the rest of the offense is pretty well set around him. The priority now will be adding young, versatile talent to a veteran-heavy defense.

Baltimore Ravens

Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OL, WR, EDGE, CB, S

Free agency chipped away at 2023’s top regular season team. Now Lamar Jackson needs blockers (and maybe another wideout) while his defense needs help both up front and in the secondary.

Buffalo Bills

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: WR, CB, S, EDGE

Finding Stefon Diggs a proper WR2 remains an elusive priority. But after a cap crunch led to a defensive exodus, the Bills have to focus on that side of the ball even more than Josh Allen’s offense.

Carolina Panthers

Needs: EDGE, CB, TE, DL, WR

Everything here is a mess and there’s no first round pick to fix it. Carolina can draft the best player available throughout the 2024 draft — and trades back to accumulate assets aren’t a bad idea, either.

Chicago Bears

D.J. Moore catches a long TD, Bears-Lions, Week 14, 2023

Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: QB, LB, EDGE, OL, WR

Chicago’s need for a wideout is lessened by Keenan Allen’s arrival — though it wouldn’t hurt to have a contingency plan behind the 32-year-old. Otherwise, improvements in the pass rush and linebacking corps could help speed the Bears’ ascent.

Cincinnati Bengals

Kareem Elgazzar-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: DL, EDGE, WR, TE, OT

Cincinnati could use bulk on both sides of the trenches. Adding Trent Brown helps, but he’s only played more than 11 games once in the last four years.. With Tee Higgins lingering under the franchise tag and requesting a trade, a Plan B for him would be prudent as well.

Cleveland Browns

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: LB, DT, EDGE, WR

Trading for Jerry Jeudy and bringing in a cache of quarterbacks capable of at least meeting Deshaun Watson’s regrettable standard — he’s the league’s 33rd-best quarterback in the two seasons since the Browns traded for him despite more than 20 accusations of sexual misconduct and what the NFL itself described as “predatory behavior” — leaves Cleveland without many glaring holes. Which is great, since the team doesn’t have a first round pick thanks to the Watson deal.

Dallas Cowboys

Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OT, C, S, CB, RB, WR

Dallas’s needs have only growth through a free agency period from which Jerry Jones has mostly opted out. The Cowboys are currently worse than they were in 2023 and will have to focus on rebuilding their offensive line (and finding CeeDee Lamb some extra receiving help).

Denver Broncos

Syndication: Democrat and Chronicle

Needs: QB, CB, LB, EDGE, S, TE

Maybe the Broncos are really going to roll through 2024 with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. Or maybe they’ll reach for a quarterback. Either way, there’s more that needs to be done here than simply sorting out who’s taking snaps.

Detroit Lions

David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: EDGE, CB, S, WR

Adding Carlton Davis and DJ Reader fixes some problems, but it would be great to give Aidan Hutchinson a high impact pass rushing pal. And that secondary remains in need of reinforcement.

Green Bay Packers

Syndication: Journal Sentinel

Needs: OT, OG, S, LB, CB

The Packers lost some key blockers up front, which is a concern since Jordan Love’s sub-19 percent pressure rate played a large role in his breakthrough. The secondary got better with the addition of Xavier McKinney and retention of Jaire Alexander, but there’s room for improvement.

Houston Texans

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: IOL, DT, S, LB, CB

Houston was comfortable enough with its roster to trade its first round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for two second-rounders. That’s a reasonable move, since the team’s positions of need should still have several solid prospects remaining on Day 2 of the next two drafts.

Indianapolis Colts

Brent Skeen-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: CB, EDGE, LB, WR

The Colts mostly held steady for 2024, betting that a healthy Anthony Richardson could take last year’s roster to the playoffs. It’s not a terrible strategy, but low-cost defensive upgrades would be a boon.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union

Needs: WR, OT, DT, EDGE, S, CB

On the bright side, the interior of the Jaguars’ line is looking solid, which should help Travis Etienne in a bounce-back season. The bad news is the receiving corps is depleted and the defense has a lot of questions to answer both up front and in the secondary.

Kansas City Chiefs

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: WR, OT, EDGE, CB

Hollywood Brown was a nice addition, but the Chiefs still need a deep threat. And, more importantly, a full-time solution at left tackle.

Las Vegas Raiders

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OT, QB, CB, WR, EDGE

The right side of the offensive line needs help, especially if Aidan O’Connell’s gonna get a fair shot to prove he’s a franchise quarterback. A star, high-ceiling lockdown cornerback would be a welcome change for the Raiders as well.

Los Angeles Chargers

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: WR, CB, DL, IOL, LB, TE

2024 is a gap year, the season in which Jim Harbaugh lines up his chess pieces and the Chargers trudge their way through salary cap hell. This year’s draft will all be about adding talent no matter the position (except quarterback, because Justin Herbert is pretty good).

Los Angeles Rams

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: DT, DE, S, EDGE, CB

Aaron Donald’s retirement only intensifies LA’s need for bulldozing power up front. A young defense could use more talent behind that group, too.

Miami Dolphins

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OL, DL, S, EDGE, CB

Miami took some heavy losses in free agency. Replenishing the offensive line that propped up the league’s top rushing attack and kept Tua Tagovailoa healthy all season will be a priority.

Minnesota Vikings

Nic Antaya/Getty Images

Needs: QB, DL, S, CB, OG

This should not be Sam Darnold’s team in 2024. The Vikings acquired a second first round pick for one reason; to provide the extra assets needed for a trade up to select a rookie QB.

New England Patriots

Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: QB, WR, OT, EDGE, CB

New England needs a Mac Jones replacement and so much more. Throwing a rookie into the fire without a reliable receiving corps or offensive line would be a recipe for failure — and at least lend credence to the idea the Vikings could move all the way up to No. 3.

New Orleans Saints

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OT, DT, TE, WR, EDGE, S

The Saints remain trapped in terrible salary cap position and need help across an aging lineup. Unless Trevor Penning’s made a massive leap this offseason, left tackle may be the biggest issue.

New York Giants

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: QB, WR, RB, CB, LB, S

There’s one year remaining on the Daniel Jones experience before New York can get out from under his four-year contract extension. That makes quarterback a possible pick in this year’s draft — but this six-win team has other fish to fry as well.

New York Jets

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: WR, S, DT, QB

Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams are the only real threats in the Jets’ receiving room and Williams has only played 16 games the last two seasons. New York could also use a high-impact run-stuffer in the middle of its line.

Philadelphia Eagles

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: LB, CB, S, DT, WR

The Eagles need to revamp the defense that contributed to last year’s collapse. Bringing in Devin White and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was a great start, but general manager Howie Roseman can’t stop there.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OT, WR, CB, LB, S

Whether it’s Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, Pittsburgh’s quarterback is gonna need someone to throw to besides George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth. An upgrade over Dan Moore at tackle wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

San Francisco 49ers

Needs: OT, IOL, CB, EDGE

Chase Young wasn’t the answer, leaving space for the Niners to find another high-upside body to toss into their deep defensive front. Rebuilding the right side of the offensive line is a priority as well.

Seattle Seahawks

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: IOL, LB, DT, EDGE

Abe Lucas and Charles Cross look like franchise tackles, but there’s room to flesh out the offensive line between them — especially given the Seahawks’ draft investments in running backs recently. A defense that was significantly less than the sum of its parts last season also needs help.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

ampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (13) in action against the Atlanta Falcons in the second half at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: EDGE, IOL, OT, CB, RB

Re-signing Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and Antoine Winfield Jr. was a great start, but there’s still room for improvement, particularly now that the Falcons look like a real threat in the NFC South. Landing a dynamic pass rusher that can approach what prime Shaquil Barrett brought to the table could be the play with the Bucs’ Day 1 pick.

Tennessee Titans

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: CB, S, EDGE, OL, QB

Tennessee’s busy run through free agency brought in some shiny new parts, but the defense is loaded with question marks. That’s especially true in the secondary, where Chidobe Awuzie could be the team’s top corner but has only played more than eight games twice in the last four seasons.

Washington Commanders

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Needs: OT, QB, EDGE, CB

The Commanders need to find a quarterback, then protect that quarterback. Afterward, they can bring in some pass rushing talent to fill the voids Montez Sweat and Chase Young left.
