On the surface, it seems like Group H at the 2023 World Cup has one powerhouse at the top and then three teams fighting for second place.
But are we sure that Germany – champions in 2003 and 2007 – will win this group? In the team’s pre-World Cup warm-up match, it lost to Zambia, 3-2, with the Germans conceding all three goals on counterattacks. Even if Germany wasn’t playing 100 percent, it’s still a massive upset. Germany is ranked second in the world by FIFA; Zambia is 77th.
Will Germany get its act together and storm to a top-place finish out of Group H? Or will it leave the door open for Colombia, South Korea or Morocco?
Let’s take a closer look at the group before bets are placed.

The Favorite: Germany
Despite being the favorite, Germany is in shaky form entering the World Cup. The Germans haven’t won back-to-back games since last fall, when they beat France and the U.S. in a pair of friendlies. In addition to its lost to Zambia, Germany also fell to Brazil in April.
Still, at its best, this Germany team is talented and skilled at every position. The country is armed with reliable goal-scorer Alexandra Popp, formidable goalkeeper Merle Frohms, and creative midfielder Lina Magull.
It will be an incredible surprise if Germany doesn’t win this group.

The Sleeper: South Korea
South Korea is 17th in the latest FIFA World Rankings and has won six of its last 10 games entering the World Cup – a stretch that also included close one-goal losses to Italy and Belgium. They were also runners-up in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup last year.
Simply put, things are trending in the right direction for the South Korean national team heading into the World Cup. The team is likely motivated to perform better in this tournament than it did in 2019 too, where it scored just once in three Group Stage defeats.
The squad features a pair of players who play in the English Women’s Super League in Cho So-hyun (Tottenham) and Lee Geum-min (Brighton). It also stars Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun, a wizard from free kick range.

Players To Know
Casey Phair, South Korea: Phair is 16 years old and was born to an American father and a South Korean mother. The forward will be one of the youngest players at the World Cup and – if she features in a game – will be the first mixed-race player to play for South Korea. It seems like there is a good chance of that happening, according to manager Colin Bell who told Reuters, “Casey is going not as a passenger but as a valuable member of the squad and has every chance of getting into the team.”
Lena Oberdorf, Germany: A rising star on the German national team, the 21-year-old central midfielder has the potential to make a big impact in this World Cup. She’s a playmaker both ends of the pitch and has the ability to deliver crisp, timely passes. It’s the second World Cup for Oberdorf, who was voted Best Young Player of the Season in the 2022-23 Champions League.
Linda Caicedo, Colombia: The 18-year-old turned heads last year at the U-17 World Cup in India when she powered Colombia to its first final in any age group, men or women. FIFA awarded her with a Silver Ball as one of the top players in the tournament. Now, she’s playing at the senior level, where she’s already impressed by winning the Golden Ball at the Copa América Femenina last year as the tournament’s top player. Expectations are big for Caicedo, who signed with Spanish giant Real Madrid earlier this year. Her challenge will be to get Colombia out of the Group Stage for just the second time ever.
