The Washington Commanders have desperately needed a quarterback since, well, forever. Or, at the very least, since the height of the Robert Griffin III era.
They thought they had one in Kirk Cousins. That didn’t work out. They thought they might’ve had another in Alex Smith. He got injured. They thought maybe Ryan Fitzpatrick could be the guy. He also got injured. The guy they landed on in Taylor Heineke just wasn’t the answer.
And now, here we are. In the Carson Wentz era.
The Commanders just reportedly traded a “package of picks” to the Colts for Wentz, including a couple of third-rounders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

They’re also taking on his full contract from the Colts and paying him $28 million next season.
Washington is paying the full $28 million due to Carson Wentz this year, which includes a $5 million roster bonus due next week.
From now on, it's Commander Carson.

And they made this move after the Colts were reportedly ready to cut him if there wasn’t a trade available to be made — which it didn’t seem like there was.
But, clearly, the Commanders were interested. They made it happen. But, still, NFL fans are kind of lost on this one. If Wentz was going to be cut and you could’ve gotten him in free agency, why would you trade future assets for him?
That’s a great question that no one really has an answer to. There were plenty of jokes, though.
I don't think Carson Wentz is really better than Taylor Heinicke at this stage. If he is, it's not by a degree that I would be willing to trade anything for.

There are NFL QBs who are worse people than Carson Wentz. There are NFL QBs who are worse at football than Carson Wentz.
Yet! Nobody has the indescribable quality of being able to make football utterly joyless in the very specific way Carson Wentz does

Carson Wentz is the classic example of an athlete whose physical traits make coaches think they can fix him and whose personality and character guarantee they never will.#Eagles

Only @Commanders will trade for someone they could have gotten for free… Colts were going to cut Carson Wentz anyway. All hail 6-11 #NFL pic.twitter.com/Mrdz4GDw9c

Regardless of Washington’s reasoning or how good or bad Wentz will be, one thing is for certain.
We’re definitely getting some theater out of this.
