What's exactly going on with Sean McVay and his future with the Rams?

When it comes to Sean McVay and whether he’s coaching the Los Angeles Rams going forward, this could all be a lot of nothing.

And by “this,” I mean the speculation and questions about whether the man who coached the team to a Super Bowl 56 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals could suddenly leave his position and go into broadcasting.

No, seriously. This could happen! And a day before the Rams’ parade, there are a few things that are swirling that feel connected to this — maybe McVay is contemplating them after soaking in the victory.

Let’s break this all down as of Tuesday afternoon:

Last week, he spoke about his future

McVay spoke with ESPN and set off some of this talk:

“I love this so much that it’s such a passion but I also know that what I’ve seen from some of my closest friends, whether it’s coaches or even some of our players, I’m gonna be married this summer, I want to have a family and I think being able to find that balance but also be able to give the time necessary,” McVay said. “I have always had a dream about being able to be a father and I can’t predict the future, you know? I jokingly say that.

“I don’t really know. I know I love football and I’m so invested in this thing and I’m in the moment right now. But at some point, too, if you said what do you want to be able to do? I want to be able to have a family and I want to be able to spend time with them.”

That’s led to some reports that McVay has considered working in broadcasting, a job I think he’d be terrific at.

After the win, he was non-committal about his return

From the Los Angeles Times:

The Rams were only a handful of hours removed from a Super Bowl LVI celebration that extended into Monday morning when coach Sean McVay said two words with potentially alarming implications for their future: “We’ll see.”

That was McVay’s response to The Los Angeles Times when asked whether he would return to coach the Rams next season.

Regarding speculation he could retire, or take a break, from coaching to take a job as a broadcaster, McVay said, “I’m just enjoying this moment right now. I’m really happy to be a part of this. Happy for that.”

Is this interfering with the Vikings' hire of offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell?

As I was writing this, ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped this:

That probably indicates that there isn’t a holdup in case McVay leaves and the Rams could keep O’Connell to take over. That was something that was buzzing on Tuesday morning:

There's also this from Rams CEO Kevin Demoff

Also from the Los Angeles Times:

“I would agree I don’t think Sean’s current pace is sustainable, in terms of how much work he puts in, if you want to have a family,” Demoff said. “But I think the one thing [is] these guys all love football. They love being around each other, they feed off of each other.

Why would he want to leave coaching for a potential TV job?

As you saw above, he’s thinking about his family and the commitment that it takes to be a head coach.
