ESPN is making a new 30 For 30 documentary about legendary broadcaster Stuart Scott

ESPN Films will be making a 30 For 30 documentary about legendary SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott, per Deadline’s Valerie Complex.

The network announced that Andre Gaines, director of the Showtime documentary The One and Only Dick Gregory, is in production on the Scott project, with a release date to be announced.

For more than two decades, Scott was one of the most beloved ESPN anchors in the network’s history. He died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 49, less than a year after receiving the ESPY’s Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his battle with the disease.

Complex reported about how the documentary will highlight just how trailblazing Scott’s career was on ESPN.

“Currently in production, the film tells the story of the broadcaster who shattered preconceived notions of how on-air figures were expected to look, talk, act, and think–and in the process, helped bring hip-hop and Black culture into the sports media mainstream,” Complex wrote. “Scott entered the sports journalism world determined to remain authentic and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. He drew admirers and critics for his unique style with references to hip-hop and other Black cultural touchstones.”

Gaines talked about with Deadline how he’s collaborating with the Scott family to pay homage to the broadcasting giant.

“Stuart Scott transcended broadcasting, journalism, sports and culture in ways that we’re only beginning to really understand and appreciate now,” Gaines said. “He made his mark on so many people, especially young black men, and his legend has only grown since his passing. The opportunity I’ve had now to examine his life, visit his home, get to know his daughters Taelor and Sydni, and understand how incredibly vast and rich a life Stuart lived, I can only hope that audiences find the same catharsis I’ve already experienced in making this film.”
