Caitlin Clark became the NCAA all-time scoring leader in the most unlikely way possible

Caitlin Clark took down another NCAA record Sunday, passing Pete Maravich for the most points in Div. I men’s or women’s basketball history.

As with most monumental sports moments, there were odds on how she would do it, and the most likely way was a three-pointer, which is how she broke the NCAA women’s scoring mark two weeks ago. DraftKings had -145 odds on it being a three-pointer again, and Clark nearly made good on those odds Sunday with an attempt from the logo just before halftime.

The shot came up just short, however, which led to the most anti-climatic way for her to achieve the record: free throws. With less than a second remaining in the half, Ohio State was whistled for a very questionable technical foul, which sent Clark to the line for two attempts. She nailed both to tie, then pass Maravich.

With +650 odds on her to break the record on a free throw, this was literally the most improbable way for it to happen. To make a sweet moment just a little less sweet, the technical foul wasn’t even a good call. Unless you had money on it, of course. Then, it was a great call.
