LAS VEGAS — LeBron James kept his playoff-like intensity from the beginning to the end of the inaugural NBA in-season tournament, setting the tone for his team — and the rest of the league — that the tournament was something to be taken seriously. And in the end, the Los Angeles Lakers, and LeBron, were too much for the Indiana Pacers, winning 123-109 on Saturday night and taking home the first NBA Cup.
The Lakers (-4) were backed by the public in both the semifinal and final, respectively, with 58 percent of the bets and 59 percent of the total dollars wagered at DraftKings Sportsbook on Los Angeles to cover against the Pacers. The action was similar at other sportsbooks.
“I can’t say I’m surprised, but we’ve taken significantly more money on the Lakers to win and cover tonight,” Hal Egeland, trader at BetMGM, told For The Win. “We’ll be cheering for the Pacers. The total isn’t as extreme as the spread, but we’ll need the under.”
The under did end up cashing, as the game stayed well below the total of 242.5.
James also won the in-season tournament MVP. He had -155 odds going into Saturday night’s game at DraftKings, with nine percent of bets and 19 percent of total dollars wagered on him. It was a better outcome for sportsbooks than Tyrese Haliburton, who had pre-tournament odds of 50-1 at some sportsbooks.
The Lakers ended up going 7-0 against the spread in NBA in-season tournament games, rewarding their backers. One bettor at DraftKings won $6,500 after his $500 bet on the Lakers at 13-1 to win the NBA Cup cashed.
