The final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown will not take place at Belmont Park in 2024.
For the first time in the history of the Belmont Stakes, the race will be held at upstate New York’s Saratoga Race Course as Belmont Park undergoes a $455 million upgrade. Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reported construction at the Long Island facility is expected to last into 2025 and Belmont Stakes officials are preparing for the race to remain at Saratoga for at least two years.
“This is likely a two-year endeavor,” NYRA president and CEO David O’Rourke told the AP. “We’re going to get it right, and we’re going to improve on it each year.”
The race purse will increase from $1.5 million to $2 million with nearly 50,000 expected to attend the event — half the capacity of Belmont Park.
Additionally, the race distance will decrease to 1 1/4 miles from the 1 1/2 miles at Belmont Park.
“Saratoga now adds to its storied history by hosting the 3rd leg of the Triple Crown,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “It’s a win for horseracing and for the Capital Region to have the excitement and the ability to host the four-day Festival in June at America’s most historic track.”
