Week 10 NFL betting recap: The 49ers were a huge winner for bettors

Week 10 of the NFL season was a interesting sports betting day, especially if you like kickers, as we saw a record five games decided on a game-winning field goal with no time remaining, including a shocking Cleveland Browns (+6) 33-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

The day also saw Josh Dobbs lead the Minnesota Vikings to another win as an underdog, the San Francisco 49ers (-3) reward bettors by demolishing the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-3 and the Houston Texans (+5.5) make a statement with a 30-27 road win against the Cincinnati Bengals — which helped one bettor in Florida win $5.5 million.

Texans, Browns help sportsbooks; 49ers a big win for bettors

C.J. Stroud and the Texans all of a sudden look like a potential force to be reckoned with in the AFC. The public was all over the Bengals as 5.5-point favorites, as 77 percent of bets and 81 percent of total dollars wagered were on Cincinnati to cover at DraftKings Sportsbook. The Bengals to cover was the second-most bet game by ticket count at BetMGM sportsbooks, and the third-most by total handle.

Houston won 30-27 in a back-and-forth affair, including a game-winning 38-yard field goal from Matt Ammendola that helped sportsbooks in the early slate. However, it also clinched a massive payday for one bettor in Florida who won $5.5 million off of a $500,000 four-leg same-game parlay, with all four legs on the Texans. The final leg was Houston moneyline.

The Browns’ shocking fourth-quarter comeback win over the Ravens also produced a winning game for several sportsbooks. One bettor at Caesars Sportsbook cashed with a $220,000 wager on the Browns +6.5.

On the other hand, the San Francisco 49ers (-3) was the most-bet game at BetMGM sportsbooks by total dollars wagered — and San Francisco didn’t disappoint. The 49ers trounced the Jaguars 34-3, which was a bad game for multiple sportsbooks — including Caesars, which took a $220,000 wager on 49ers -3.

“The 49ers game was our worst game of the day by far,” Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading at Caesars Sportsbook, said on Sunday night. “A lot of bettors were looking for them to get off the schneid and they do so in emphatic fashion. The second-worst game was the Steelers covering, since we had a $240,000 wager on Steelers -3, -120.”

Other sportsbooks reported similar results on the 49ers, including the Borgata in Atlantic City, which was more hurt by the game staying under the total of 44.5.

“The total was really where we lost on the 49ers game,” Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at the Borgata, said in a text. “Lost a little on the side.”

The Steelers (-3) beat the Green Bay Packers 23-19, in part thanks to a blocked PAT.

“We did OK,” John Murray, executive director at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, said via text. “We had a very good morning, but gave some back in the afternoon.”

The Dallas Cowboys (-17.5) winning and covering in a 49-17 win over the New York Giants in a game featuring the largest point spread of the season, was another poor result for sportsbooks.

“It was a great morning, not so great afternoon,” Zachary Lucas, retail sportsbook director at Twin Spires, said in a text message. “Ravens and Bengals games were good; 49ers, Vikings and Steelers were bad.”

It wasn’t a big decision either way for the sportsbooks I spoke with, including Caesars.

“Looks like a week for the players,” Pullen noted. “We’re a small loser as of right now, nothing too huge. It seems weird with a few popular favorites (Ravens, Bengals) losing outright, but just the way it shook out.”
