The Bills’ shrinking playoff chances means it's time to remodel their Super Bowl window

It should have never gotten this dire for the Buffalo Bills.

Any team with a franchise quarterback like Josh Allen should be in contention for the Super Bowl year after year. Instead, after an epic collapse to the Denver Broncos on Monday night, scapegoat offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey is no longer employed by the organization, and Trevon Diggs apparently thinks his brother can do a lot better than Allen.

Woof. Someone, please put this fire out because that fateful Super Bowl probably isn’t happening any time soon.

Unfortunately, though, it looks like this Buffalo blaze will continue to rage on. Especially until the end of the 2023 season. With the Bills sitting at a middling 5-5 (they have the same record as the Las Vegas Raiders and Indianapolis Colts, dearest readers), the betting market is starting to see the forest for the trees. Per BetMGM, Buffalo is now favored to miss the postseason for the first time since 2018 — Josh Allen’s rookie year. In a tough AFC, I totally get fading the Bills.

This news should be particularly devastating to any bettors who foresaw Lombardi Trophy glory in Western New York. As of Tuesday afternoon, 9.8 percent of all money wagered on a team to win Super Bowl 58 with BetMGM is on the Bills. It gets worse with the presumptive AFC winner — 18.5 percent of all money placed on a team winning the conference rests with Buffalo. Uh, yeah, call it a hunch, but I have my doubts anyone will further hammer the Bills to head to Las Vegas this February.

All of this paints the picture of Buffalo desperately needing a reset — either in the coming weeks or the offseason.

What that looks like precisely, I can’t say for certain. But I’d start with finding a viable second receiving option for Stefon Diggs, which was a problem highlighted last January. And I’d meaningfully address an interior offensive line that can’t pass block, which was also an issue discussed last January.

As long as Allen is their quarterback, the Bills will remain a marquee team. But calling a fringe playoff squad a Super Bowl contender is a bit overzealous until they start addressing their fatal flaws.
