With the 2023-24 NBA season officially tipping off on Tuesday night, we’ve started to get more information about significant preseason wagers. And one certainly stood out from a bettor at BetMGM.

There are many markets available to wager on, including NBA title futures, bets to win the East/West and NBA MVP. Bettors can also wager on individual teams to make or miss the postseason.

Of all these options, one bettor chose to wager against LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers making the playoffs — and he went big.

The bettor wagered $50,000 on the Lakers to miss the postseason at +300 odds, which would win $150,000. The West is a deep conference this year, but LeBron’s teams have also made the postseason in 16 of the past 18 seasons (although they have missed them in two of the past five seasons).

Much of the wager will depend on the health of LeBron and Anthony Davis, two of the most valuable players to the spread in the NBA. Oddsmakers I asked before the season had LeBron ranked ninth (3.25 points ATS) and Davis 10th (3.19). The Lakers also had a big offseason, signing free agents Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince, Cam Reddish and Jaxson Hayes, along with re-signing Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
