The Open is being taken over by someone with the last name Fitzpatrick this go-around, but it’s not who you think it is.
Golfer Alex Fitzpatrick sat tied for seventh at the time of publishing on Saturday through three rounds at the legendary tournament at Hoylake, ahead of his brother (and U.S. Open champion) Matt Fitzpatrick (tied for 13th).
The Open Championship: Live leaderboard, Schedule, Tee times
The catch is that Matt Fitzpatrick is ranked ninth of all golfers in the world, and Alex Fitzpatrick is ranked 561st.
Consider Alex Fitzpatrick’s longshot odds: he began the tournament at +4500 to finish in the top 10, at +13000 to finish in the top five and at +80000 to win the whole thing.
He’s also two shots clear of his brother (and 2022 US Open Champion) Matt Fitzpatrick.
He’s ranked 9th in the world. 😅

It’s going to be quite a conversation at the Fitzpatrick family dinner table if Alex finishes ahead of Matt at one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year.
While Matt Fitzpatrick will still be one of the world’s best golfers by the time this is over, people are going to be taking Alex Fitzpatrick a lot more seriously after this stellar performance at The Open.
