If you caught last year’s Kentucky Derby, then you remember the absolute stunner of a race, which ended with Rich Strike’s incredible upset and left the horse racing world in total shock.
Rich Strike entered the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with the longest odds in the field. He — with jockey Sonny Leon and trainer Eric R. Reed — went into the race with 80-1 odds and only actually made the cut after a late scratch from a competitor.
Indeed, Rich Strike’s long-shot odds seemed about right even as the horses exited the final turn of the 1.125-mile race. As they raced down the frontstretch, Rich Strike seemed nowhere in sight — until he passed favorite Epicenter in the final seconds for victory.
