Super teams are poised to dominate the WNBA this season.
The Las Vegas Aces bring back most of the players that helped the team win the championship last season, and they added future Hall of Famer Candace Parker. And the New York Liberty spent big and made moves, adding Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot to pair with Sabrina Ionescu and a slew of other talented players.
Oddsmakers are projecting the Aces and Liberty as the favorites to win the title this season.
And they’re also projecting the leaders on those teams to be the top contenders for MVP.
DraftKings has Stewart as the favorite to win MVP at +250. Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson – the reigning league MVP – is just behind her at +280.
And the players with the two next-best odds are also members of the Aces and Liberty, respectively. Las Vegas guard Kelsey Plum is at +800, while New York’s Ionescu is at +1100.
The next player might have the most enticing odds for bettors: Brittney Griner is +1500 to win MVP.
Griner, of course, did not play last season as she was being wrongfully detained in a Russian prison for 294 days. She’s back with the Phoenix Mercury now and could be poised for a big season. Griner averaged a career-best in rebounds in 2021 with 9.5 per game and was also second in the league in scoring that season with 20.5 points per game. She was also first in PER in 2021 with a mark of 28.4. If Griner returns to her 2021 form and leads Phoenix to the playoffs, the eight-time all-star could win her first league MVP award.
