New Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer gives first look at open world and multiplayer

Update: The new Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer is out, and as well as lots of new Pokémon and people, it has two major additions: a proper open-world and four player co-op.

While both were present in some form in Sword & Shield, these are being touted on the official site as something another level above. The open-world is described as one “you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story.” That’s opposed to Sword & Shield’s open zones which connected between more linear areas. The hint, at least, is a more Elden Ring or Breath of the Wild style experience where you discover caves and areas.

In addition, the entire game will be playable with three friends wandering around the world with you. Looks like up to four will be able to explore together, though there’s no details on how it will work with, for example, story progression, rewards, capture, battles, and so on.

In addition, three new Pokémon and a few returners were seen. Here are the official apages for early favourite Lechonk, smol friend Smoliv, and the new lightning rat Pawmi. Legendaries Koraidon and Miraidon were also shown.

Original story: We’re at the announcement that a trailer is coming stage of the game release cycle, aren’t you excited? But hey, you do want to know, so Nintendo are going to oblige: there’s a new Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer on the way tomorrow.

At 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern the Pokémon YouTube channel will have another trailer for the upcoming games, from which we’ve seen relatively little. We know what the starters look like (the grass cat is the best, shut up toof-stans), and the general tone of the region, but that’s about it.

It’s also worth noting that in the previous trailer the game certainly looked a little rough. Whether that’s just the nature of the Switch, something the Pokémon company is doing wrong, or evidence of an early build is up for debate. However, that should be answered tomorrow, depending on how it looks.

The games are still due out this year, though who knows, maybe that’ll change tomorrow as well. See you back here.
