The full circle moments in life are always the best ones — even when they’re not your own.
That’s why the entire internet was so excited this morning when Kanye West announced his Yeezy apparel brand would be partnering with Gap to put West’s gear on the shelves of every Gap store starting in 2021.
West announced the partnership from his Twitter account this morning. He previewed some of the Gap apparel he created and then tweeted the actual announcement of the new deal with Gap.
He used the hashtag #WestDayEver to make the announcement and show off the new gear — though, this doesn’t seem like a great picture.
West has always talked about this being a goal of his. He said he wanted to turn Yeezy into the “McDonalds” or “Apple” of apparel in an interview earlier this year. To do that, he had to find a way to turn his high-end brand into a more accessible operation.
That’s what Gap is for Yeezy. And, in turn, Gap gets the Kanye West boost. It’s a win-win.
But to truly understand why people appreciate West’s new deal with Gap so much, you have to know where all of this stems from. West and Gap have always been connected.
Kanye West used to work at Gap as a teenager. He rapped about it in 2004 on his debut College Dropout album. He talked about how miserable he was at the store in the song Spaceships on the album.
Let’s go back, back to the Gap
Look at my check—wasn’t no scratch
So if I stole, wasn’t my fault
Yeah, I stole—never got caught
They take me to the back and pat me
Asking me about some khakis
Then, nearly a decade later in 2013 Kanye talked about a failed attempt at working with Gap to create a clothing line, saying he “couldn’t get past the politics.”
Finally, in 2020, he got the deal done and Twitter was so excited to see this happening for West.
There were some pretty funny ones in there, too.
This is all pretty inspiring. If only we could all speak things into existence in this way.
