Why isn't Max Scherzer pitching in the World Series?

Nationals ace Max Scherzer was scheduled to pitch Game 5 of the World Series, but a surprise late scratch due to injury has Washington turning to Joe Ross to pitch instead.

Scherzer could feature later in the series, according to Nationals manager Davey Martinez.

Scherzer’s absence from Game 5 is a result of neck and back spasms, which Martinez says have been flaring up for the past few days and making it impossible for Scherzer to pitch. Martinez says the pain is a result of severe irritation in a neck nerve and right trapezius, via USA TODAY Sports.

According to Martinez, Scherzer was in such pain that he couldn’t dress himself on Sunday morning, relying on his wife to help him get his clothes on.

“He’s very upset. He wants to get out there with his teammates,” Martinez said, via CBS Sports. “Hopefully, we can get him back out there for Game 6 or 7.”

Scherzer has been a dominant force for the Nationals as of late, posting a 2.16 ERA in five appearances in October.
