Three-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski retired back in March, but the door is open for a return.

The former New England Patriot told reporters on Tuesday that the physical pain brought on by football had a negative impact on his mental well-being.

“Football was bringing me down, and I didn’t like it,” he said. ”I was losing that joy in life, the joy. I really was.”

Gronkowski spoke at a news conference Tuesday to announce his partnership with CBDMEDIC, a line of topical pain treatments including CBD extract.

He called the treatment “life-changing” and said he could play right now from a physical standpoint if he wanted to. But it’s more about the need for mental rest that’s keeping him away from football, saying he was “not in a good place” when he chose to retire.

“If I have the desire to play football again, if I feel passionate about football again, if I’m feeling like I need to be out there on the field, I will go back to football,” Gronkowski said.
