It’s time for the Women’s World Cup final between the USWNT and Netherland, and U.S. head coach Jill Ellis has named her starting lineup. Like every other decision she’s made this tournament, there’s going to be some banter about it.
Dropped again is Lindsey Horan, the reigning NWSL MVP and someone who at times has looked like the USWNT’s most complete midfielder.
In her place are Sam Mewis, who was dropped from the semifinal, and Rose Lavelle, who went down with an apparent injury in the semifinal and appeared to mouth the words “It’s my hamstring.”
Also in the starting lineup is Megan Rapinoe, who sat out the semifinal with a reported hamstring injury.
UPDATE: Rapinoe and Lavelle have both scored and the USWNT lead 2-0. So much for risky. Ellis is a genius.
Lavelle has struggled with hamstring injuries for much of the last year, but after the game she said she was fine and ready to play. Rapinoe as well said she was ready for the final.
Still … coach Jill Ellis’ decision is a risky one. These are two players nursing hamstrings, which you famously need to play soccer and run around for 90 minutes. If they’re healthy, great. If both pull up with hamstring issues in the first 30 minutes, now there are major problems for the USWNT.
They’re deep enough that they can handle it most likely, but you only get three substitutes in soccer. Starting two players who are less than 100 percent … Ellis is brave.
