Training camp is underway for handful of teams around the NFL – which means the NFL news cycle will begin to hum. Here’s a look at a handful of storylines from around the league.
Five players began a holdout. Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas, Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and Washington Redskins tackle Trent Williams did not report for training camp.
Fantasy football owners alert: Le’Veon Bell is up for 500 touches with the New York Jets. It’s never happening, but the people who draft him can dream. Bell is rearing to go after taking a year off.
Another fantasy football alert: Dolphins running back Kalen Ballage and Chargers running back Austin Ekeler got run with the first-team offense on their respective teams. Ballage is in a battle with Kenyan Drake and Ekeler could be the starter if Gordon’s holdout with the Chargers continues into the season.
Earl Thomas explains why he flipped off Pete Carroll. “I gave Pete the middle finger because I felt like he wasn’t being honest with me.”
The Steelers signed coach Mike Tomlin to contract extension. This comes on the heels of Pittsburgh parting ways with two of its best skill players, running back Le’Veon Bell and receiver Antonio Brown. They departed, in part, because Tomlin couldn’t keep the locker room together.
Bill Belichick is grumpy as ever, and absolutely does not want to rehash the New England Patriots’ tampering filling against the Houston Texans over personnel executive Nick Caserio. Belichick also didn’t want to talk about Tom Brady’s contract, Josh Gordon’s suspension or anything else of significance in Patriots’ training camp.
After getting released by the Green Bay Packers, Defensive tackle Mike Daniels will make numerous visits with NFL teams, according to Cleveland.com. His first meeting will be with the Cleveland Browns. Daniels is an outstanding talent and can help a number of Super Bowl contenders.
