Aly Raisman offers support to Gabby Douglas after latest revelation of sexual abuse

Aly Raisman tweeted her support for teammate Gabby Douglas on Wednesday after Douglas became the latest to accuse a former USA Gymnastics team doctor of sexually assaulting her.

Douglas, whose insensitive tweets in the wake of Raisman’s allegations against Larry Nassar drew sharp criticism from Simone Biles, another of the “Final Five” team that dominated the Rio olympics, replied:

Nassar, the doctor who faces more than 100 allegations of sexually assaulting the athletes he was suppose to be caring for, pleaded guilty to seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with seven victims on Wednesday.

And while this story — brought to light through investigative reporting from The Indianapolis Star and USA TODAY Network — feels as though it has stretched so long already, we probably are only now beginning to understand the full extent of what happened and the damage it did to the victims.

Douglas accused Nassar in an Instagram post that also served as an apology for the victim-blaming tweet she sent in the wake of Raisman revealing that Nassar had also molested her:

Nassar had the gall to frame his guilty pleas as an attempt to “stop the hurting” and “let the healing start.”

The first of those will never happen, the latter is a long way off.
