D’Angelo went on The Tonight Show on Tuesday night and sang Prince’s Sometimes It Snows in April accompanied by Princess, a Prince cover band comprised of Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum.

It was a moving tribute from D’Angelo, who will forever be tied to Prince by his massive hit Untitled (How Does it Feel), which D’Angelo originally wrote as a Prince tribute. Fallon’s bandleader and Roots drummer Questlove, who performed drums on Untitled, once wrote of the song: “finding the line between parody and honesty … In an era of ‘the cover song’, redoing a Prince song was taboo. This is the second best thing.”
