It’s not exactly breaking news to report that, sometimes, people can get really mean on the internet, and high-profile athletes like Ian Poulter often come in for the worst of it.
Poulter isn’t exactly the most likable golfer on Twitter — he’s outspoken, some would say overly confident, and he doesn’t shy away from flaunting his wealth — so one fan decided to call him on it at the Valspar Championship. Poulter got him kicked out at that event, then when the fan doubled-down on Twitter not long after, Poulter called him out on it.
And that was the final straw for Florida Southern, the man’s employer, who terminated him from his job shortly after.
The tweets indeed had consequences for Downum.
“He’s no longer employed at the institution,” said Pete Meyer, Florida Southern’s director of athletics and dean of wellness on Wednesday.
