Jaromir Jagr has already played in nine NHL All-Star games in his pretty remarkable career. And now, at age 43, with his most productive years behind him, it’s understandable that Jagr was hoping for a little time off.
But, fans had other ideas. Despite his pleas that they stop, fans voted Jagr, along with noted enforcer John Scott, Patrick Kane and Alex Ovechkin, in as one of the game’s four captains anyway. All his pleading for naught, Jagr will be headed to Nashville in late January when he’d really rather just be in the Bahamas.
“Everybody else is going to have vacation and I have to play three-on-three. That’s great!” Jagr said after the Florida Panthers 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night.
“I would rather be in Florida, trust me,” Jagr said. “Or the Bahamas.”
Before voting was finalized, Jagr joked that he’d die if he had to play 3-on-3 with some of the game’s biggest stars.
“I asked the fans don’t vote for me, and they didn’t listen,” said Jagr. “I think they didn’t like me much, so they wanted to see me dead.”
It’s hard to tell how much of this is Jagr just being his jocular self and how much is truth, but it doesn’t seem like he’s fully kidding.
Getting voted into the All-Star game is an honor, but it’s also a lot of extra work. And for a guy who’s been through it multiple times, the shine has probably worn off quite a bit. Most players that don’t go the All-Star Game use the extra few days to vacation somewhere sunny and warm. The dude has earned some time off.
Also, Jagr isn’t obligated to attend the All-Star festivities. Though, according to NHL rules, if does skip the event, he will have to sit out the Panthers first game back from the break.
