Giants punter Steve Weatherford has some advice for LeBron James, Kevin Love

presstime_2

Hey everybody! It is my favorite time of the week, PressTime! Before I get to your questions, I just wanted to say what a crazy week of March Madness we have just seen! I don’t know about you guys, but the game between Kentucky and Notre Dame had me on the edge of my seat. I know a lot of people’s brackets were in Andrew Harrison’s hands when he shot those last second free throws to advance Kentucky to the final four. Now that we know that we got Kentucky, Duke, Wisconsin, and Michigan State in the final four, it is officially put up or shut up time in March Madness and I am pumped!

Also, I want to give a shout out to the Dickinson High School senior class and a big congrats to the five winners of this year’s Project Prom. I really loved having the opportunity to speak with the seniors at Dickinson High School last Wednesday and feel blessed that I can make the prom for five seniors a night that they will always remember. I remember what a special experience my own senior prom was when I was in high school and feel completely honored to be able to participate in their night.

And with that, it is time to get to your questions!

What’s up Steve!? A lot of attention this week has been focused on Lebron James and Kevin Love’s relationship as teammates. If you’re Lebron James and Kevin Love, how do you deal with the media attention to your friendship?

Thank the lord I do not have to deal with the level of scrutiny from the media that Lebron James seems to endure on a daily basis. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have every single move I made be dissected and analyzed. In regards to managing the relationship between Lebron and Kevin, if I were them I would stay away from commenting on the relationship.

They just need to block out the noise and go out on the court and compete. As a professional athlete myself, there are always going to be teammates that you are close with and teammates whom you might not be as close to. The key is that you maintain a healthy working relationship and have respect for one another. As long as Lebron and Love know that they can trust the other on the court, they should have no problems working together and competing for a championship.

Hey Steve. This week the Giants signed defensive linemen George Selvie and Kenrick Ellis. How do you see these two additions fitting in with the team next year?

Hello Rob! I’ll start by saying that I am very excited to welcome George Selvie and Kenrick Ellis to the New York Giants. It is exciting knowing that George and Kenrick will be adding both depth and productivity to our defensive line this upcoming season. Kenrick Ellis is a gigantic defensive tackle who will draw constant double teams and give players like Jason Pierre-Paul, Damontre Moore, and Selvie free shots at opposing quarterbacks next year. Our defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, will certainly have fun with all of the new pass-rushing toys he will have at his disposal next season. I will end by saying that I am grateful that I won’t be playing quarterback for our opponents next season and that I don’t have to deal with blitzes from our defensive line!

In the past year the NFL has dealt with many scandals, ranging from domestic violence to child abuse. What are your thoughts on the current state of the NFL?

I will start by saying that it would be unfair for me to comment on any specific player’s situation regarding such issues due to the fact that I am not involved and do not know the specific facts within such cases. I can say that as a loving husband and father, the idea of harming the ones I love is unthinkable. I also can say that the vast majority of the NFL players I play with are really good people and outstanding citizens. Just this past week, I participated in a fundraiser which benefited women’s shelters. The fundraiser was called Dinner with the Pros, and included myself, as well as other NFL players trying to help raise money for battered women. I think a fundraiser like Dinner with the Pros accurately reflects how the majority of the NFL players feel about domestic violence and shows how most of the NFL is made up of good guys.

Hey Steve! I heard that you spend your off-seasons in southern California. I was wondering where you prefer living, New York or California?

Great question! California is paradise and I absolutely love spending time there. I mean, what could possibly be better than 72 degree weather everyday and the beach? I’ll tell you, New York! New York is the greatest city on the planet and I feel unbelievably blessed that I get to call it home when I am doing what I love, which is punting for the New York Giants. New York is an electric place and there is nowhere else in the world quite like it. I truly appreciate and identify with the constant hustle of the city and love the attitude native New Yorkers have. Frank Sinatra says it best in his song New York, New York, “If I can make it hear, I can make it anywhere!”

That’s it everyone. I appreciate you guys and all of the questions you guys have been asking. Keep them coming! If you have any questions on your mind about fitness, the Giants, or just about myself in general, please tweet me at @Weatherford5 but be sure to include the hashtag #AskPressTime.
